Subaru Liberty GT MY05 Blown Turbo

Hey Guys,

Sorry about this I am new to turbo cars

I bought a Liberty GT MY05 Manual about 4 weeks ago. Yesterday I went to leave a friends driveway, and as I put my foot down I heard a loud pop and lost all boost. Upon taking it to a Mechanic to have a look he found that the back turbine wheel had destroyed it'self.

What I wanted to know is there anyway to buy a new exhaust side turbine wheel or would it be better to get a replacement turbo and if so does anyone have any idea where I could get one.

A little about the car. MY05 Subaru Liberty GT Manual. It has had the XB Power kit from MRT performance on it. Would it wise to go for the XC for the new turbo or try and find one elsewhere?

If the turbine has crapped itself then it could have other issues as well as it's generally the seals that go before a turbine. There are a number of issues that could cause a turbine to go and it will generally be a number of factors combined. As the car has had an aftermarket tune I'd be taking it to a turbo specialist to have it all looked at. Maybe MRT would be the go as they did the work but then again that could have caused the problem in the first place. I'm sure the Melbourne boys will know of a good turbo specialist for you.

Don't waste your time trying to repair the turbo, it will end up costing you significantly less if you can find a complete replacement, and its a great opportunity to upgrade to a larger unit if that's what you're into!

As for a larger turbo I know it has been put on here before. But what turbo is on the Liberty GT MY05 Manual. I read that there are different turbos for the auto and manual and if so what would be on mine and what would be a larger/upgrade to what is on it.

So I have just found out after pulling the turbo off the car that it is a TD04HLA.

Is there any bolt-on upgrade or somewhere I can find one of these turbos as a replacement.

Hi Q,

I took it to a MRT partner and he rang the guys at MRT and they said it would be a VF38. Upon the MRT partner taking the turbo off he revealed it was a TD04HLA. I am going to speak to him tomorrow and if I can't get an explanation from him I will take it to MRT in Rhodes. Not the sort of hassles I wanted to have to deal with but Oh well.

Once I hear more from them I will post back.

how about highflowing the original turbo ?

it seems precision turbo offers a TD05 highflow unit that bolts on to the factory manifold

VF38 is for the auto, manual has TD04HLA (which you have).

Hi guys, its been a while since I been around.

On friday my td04hla-19t also blew. Heard a pop then a rattling noise, I thought it was the cat converters, so got a whole new exhaust put on in case if anything had gone through it could end up in the mufflers already etc. plus I really was tired of the stock sound lol.

When they stripped the exhaust, they noticed the turbine wheel was wobbly, could be pushed by hand. So got them to still change the exhaust, and the sound is still there, so going to need a new turbo, not going to bother repairing it it has done 185000km.

I been trying to source another td04hla-19t, but most places aren't much help unless I have the actual part numer from Mitsubishi (as the td04 is a mitsu turbo) apparently its usually 8 digits starting with 49. Anyone know of this?

However a part of me wants to upgrade, although if I do so need to tune it which is another ~$1000.

A mechanic I called up said the biggest bolt on upgrade is a VF34 (don't know how trustworthy and whether he understands the difference between a liberty manual and auto). (quoted 1600)
However I'm looking at also the td05 high flow from precision turbo (quoted 1650)
Or how about a VF37? Or am I best to just get another of the td04hla?

Any other suggestions, or thoughts on what is best for me. I don't want to make too many more upgrades to make it all work.

They reckon the tdo4hla would fail again and they are too expensive to replace (like $5700) they reckon the MRT modified turbo they install in the XC powerkit is the way to go including modified up-pipe and downpipe and MRT intercooler and tune will cost $6100 is the way to go. Plus will give about 40kW gain.

Does this seem right? Does anyone ACTUALLY know of anyone who has replaced the stock tdo4hla and found it to be easier than all this?

1600 for a tune
then rest is for turbo and labout for 4.5K
seems like abit too much
im sure you can pick up cheaper td05 turbos with twinscrolls from the stats for about the 1K mark

The stock turbo will cost $5700 to replace, wtf? A rebuild/highflow won't cost anywhere near that much and how long did the original one last you, 185k? They're inflating the price and making dire predictions to make their "much better" option look more appealing. I wonder if that $5700 includes a retune...

Do they include sexual favours in the $6100 quote?

And intercooler and a couple of pipes, so not quite as bad as it sounds but still hugely inflated

Do not go for that MRT setup! Search around and look at local gtpumps gtps01 goggle that. Much more affordable and tune you need anyway.
