The alarm will probably go ballistic until its internal battery goes flat but otherwise you won't hurt it.

unless you know how to disable the siren. Caught me out a couple of times with the old car. Think my ears are still ringing

hmm I have no idea how to disable it... thats the trouble with buying a used car and it having aftermarket things installed with no paperwork!

So I know it's been a while but anyways...
last night I disconnected the battery for 30mins, (didn't need to disable the alarm)
the reconnected it and started the car up, E/T was working! which was a good sign I thought..
I let it idle for 10mins or so as advised to.. (well some said to do that some said not to) then took it for a drive
the whole thing seems to be smoother now? maybe it's just a bit of a placebo effect but it does seem to drive differently..

anyways, I took it for another drive later last and the e/t was working that time too...
This morning though, it's back to its old tricks.. just displaying the - - - :(

just found this
http://www.thel7.com/TSB/08-37-06.pdf
which seems to indicate that the fix is to replace the Information Display assembly
