Upgraded from TD04HLA?

Postby legacydan » Fri Jan 14, 2011 8:45 am

Has anyone on here swapped from a TD04 to anything else? Looking to swap over to vf36/37 setup and just curious if anyone has ventured down this path before? or any other options? I recently came across a guy in Uk that upgraded to a vf36 and might try do the same. Hard to find a used vf36 though. vf37 parts can be gotten easy enough so might go for that instead.

I was looking into possible future options when my turbo kicks the bucket.

So far the best bang for buck (and keeping twin scroll sweetness) is along these lines:

I guess it really depends what you are after. For me I want to keep close to stock boost pressure but also benefit from twin scroll and fast spooling like the stock TD04HLA.

As mentioned in the other thread, if you upgrade from TD04HLA then you will need new turbo bracket, new up pipe & down pipe to match. Best upgrade would be a VF36/37 though if you are sticking to twinscroll.

If you are going back to single scroll you may need to modify your headers or the new up pipe to merge into the one pipe since the dual ones won't suit a twin pipe'd up-pipe. Best bet is just buy new headers as well.
Cheers,

thanks for the info, ill be sticking with the twinscroll alright and looks like vf37s are easier(cheaper) to get my hands on. I could get away with just replacing turbo, turbo bracket, up pipe and downpipe. that will involve some custom work on the up pipe to get it to fit the td04 twinscroll headers. this should work out cheaper than having to replace headers too i hope! just means the upgrade will be staying, their will be no going back to standard after this if i ever decide to sell up!

A TMIC change does not require changing the intake manifold as it doesn't connect directly to it - it connects to a pipe which then connects to the throttle body which then connects to the intake manifold.
