3.0 whine

Postby Woodduck » Fri Aug 13, 2010 12:05 pm

I know there has been a few threads about this but this is slightly different. I know we've all come to the conclusion that the 3.0 for some reason whines a little. Most people have put it down to gearbox or powersteering etc. But when i open my bonnet I can pin point directly where its coming from. I might whip up a video to see if someone can tell me if they know what it is. To me it sounds like a noisy bearing. Now im very much not mechanically minded, but it appears to be coming from the top timing belt pulley. Is this something i should get looked at ASAP? Ill see if i can get a video to explain better.

3ltr uses a timing chain so the belt (V-Belt) your refering to goes around the below pulleys.

If your belt is cracked or frayed then you should replace it.

If you look at the engine front on:

(1) Power steering oil pump pulley = Top left pulley
(2) Belt tension adjuster ASSY = Middle left pulley
(3) Crank pulley = Bottom middle pulley
(4) A/C compressor = Top right pulley
(5) Belt idler = Middle middle pulley
(6) Generator / Altenator = Top middle pulley

There is a whining noise every time the missus drives with me, I just have to bear it until she gets out
Now that I'm in North America, I'm greatly concerned about raised pick-up trucks and owners of wedge shaped vehicles. Seriously, not only do you have to be concerned about one hitting you in an accident, they stand a good chance of driving over you at the same time!

I had the bearing fail in the alternator on mine earlier this year.

If you want to try to pin point the source of the whine, grab a long screwdriver (preferrably one with the metal shaft right through the handle) and use it as a stethoscope (put the blade/philips-head end against the spot you think is creating the noise and your ear against the other end of the screwdriver. Or you could get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope

I had a similar niose earlier this year.
What confused me was when the car had been driven in the rain it seemed to quieten the noise.
I got the alternator reconditioned and the noise had changed.
I later got the front belt/pulleys (x2) replaced and the noise was completely gone.
I would start with the alternator as it was the cheaper of the two jobs.
If you'd like to know what costs were involved shoot me a pm.

good luck-

doesn't sound too dissimilar to the alternator bearing failure my car had. It isn't necessarily the alternator, could be any of the pulleys

We had a similar whine coming from a mates 3 rb and it was a bearing in the clutch. Had seized up completely. His had done 200,000kms though (my06)
