I am having a 3.0R outback and willing to go for a Liberty 3.0R-B manual for a better driving enjoyment. I've seen quite a few reliability issues from subaru in the forum, just wondering if anyone has a 3.0R-B manual with 100k or over and if there is any serious problem? Is the engine and transmission reliable enough to reach more kms? or how much it cost you to fix if there was any problem?

I bought my outback 1 year ago with a year of extended warranty left. It was overdue for service for a few month but the previous owner didn't drive a lot before it was sold to me. Subaru has fixed some minor problems such as oil leaking under the warranty, the aircon has some noise but the dealer didn't think that was a problem which need to be fixed. So far the outback looks ok with 87k on clock, but I do worry about what's about to come up in a short while, and the subaru service cost CAN just suck your wallet dry.

I am thinking if I should spend more at the first time to get a newer and lower mileage one, or I could think of a higher mileage one if there is not very likely to get a big bill any major problems (engine, transmission, etc). Many thanks~~~~!

123k on the clock here. No engine problems for me. Centre diff went around 40,000km ago (replaced under warranty). Lower control arm rear bushes replaced this time last year under warranty (~25,000km ago), though this is a common issue across the Liberty range, not isolated to the 3RB. Alternator refurbished for a noisy (on the way out) bearing, again under extended warranty. That's about it I think. Not babied by any margin either

Clocked up 105k on my 04 Outback 3.0 and other than replacing the inner guard due to my wife hitting a wombat never had a problem with the car. I service it every 5000ks (oil/filter @5k, up on the hoist, fluids etc @10k) which certainly helps.

mines going great with no issues at 117,000kms

I know of a Subaru Hatch with 340,000 on it. Still running strong and no rust. Mind you it is owned by a pedantic old man.

My original GX Liberty is still going with 240,000+ on it now.

i had a gen2 2.5NA with 225k no issues, just replaced the 02 and AFM and was good.

my mate has an old 2.0i impreza with over 300k's, he hasnt had issues, just changed the clutch and its alll good

looks like older gen subaru has better reliability? anybody has idea how much to do a engine rebuild or change the manual gearbox/clutch for a gen4?

No modern car should need a rebuild or a new box after 100,000kms unless those 100,000kms have all been done on a race track...

at present i own a 05 3.0RB and have had for the last 12 months
just hit 210,000k (keeping in mind it had a replacement motor courtesy of subaru approx 80,000k ago).
Issues so far:
* front strut rebuild $850
* alternator rebuild $200
* clutch will be getting replaced in the next month or so along with control arm bushes (just to be safe).
none of which i would consider to be outside of the realm of maintenance.

the main reason i picked this car was because i know the previous owner and history of the vehicle.
i spent many hours researching reviews of the car and every aspect thrilled me, with the exception of modding options.

good luck with the purchase.

Thanks mate, I've heard someone replaced their engine only at 82k (3.0R-B), just not sure if there could be any hangover by replacing the engine or it will just feel like a new one.

nice analogy but its not something i have noticed nor have i been concerned about at all.
i'm in the process of gettin the car ready for some track time at Marulan so no room for a hangover.

The only reliablilty issue i hear about the ez30r is they can use oil.
and some seem to self detruct from bearing failure. though subuaru wont stand by it.

I'm sitting on 99,900 km right now. I'll keep a close eye on it in 100km time.
