Idea is good but I think it would just be sucking in a lot of hot air.

i got mine similar to that just with no cover. mine is a HKS so i can take it out and clean it when i need to

does make a little bit extra induction sound but nothing crazy

Irrelevant - when your car is moving, you will be forcing cold air from outside the engine bay to your air filter. The only time you will notice heatsoak is when the car is stationary.

Have been looking around for the original no luck not even PHAT can't find one

Not irrelevant at all.

The intake sucks air in, and so in and around the filter box is a low pressure region. Some of the cool air going into the engine bay when car is moving, also goes through the radiator. That heated air will then flow to anywhere that is of lower pressure than the front exterior of the car. Some of it will go through the bay and out the back under the firewall, some will go into the exposed air filter box.

By not having an exposed filter you are not creating a low pressure region around the airbox area as it is all enclosed up to the air intake opening under the bonnet.

very true jim, if you removed a headlight it might work alright.
the possible slighty better throttle responce and marginal top-end gain on a turbo application would not be worth the extra heat transfered. would be better putting in a CAI or something along those lines. Doing what has been done in the above piture would be really bad for an NA as they are more effected by hot air as no IC to help reduce temps.

the saying goes for every 1 degree is 1 hp.

So what you guys are saying is, give it up and look for something else

i personally would bother changing the air box setup.
if anything, replace the airbox with CAI into the guard with pod.
on my NA outback i dropped from 15 degree above ambient, to 1-2 degree by CAI into the guard.

+1.

Removing the snorkel and front of the airbox at the expense of sucking in hot air is not worth it, when taking into account that those parts are not even restrictive in the first place unless making big power.

Unless you are at WOT the most restrictive part of the intake is the butterfly itself!
