yeh its damn annoying. i either have to shift when there is no load on the drive train, or double clutch my way through. double clutch works perfectly, but the problem is still present. ive spoken to a mechanic today about it and he said that the whole gearbox will have to be dismantled, but he didnt know the cost of parts until he sees it. just have to keep double clutching till i save some $$$ i guess :)

Tried changing the fluid? Low cost approach short of having the gearbox overhauled.

Specifically, change to a different type :)

Most dealers will use Castrol Multitrax, whereas independent mechanics will use god knows what. Our gearboxes are really picky when it comes to gearbox oil. I changed to Castrol Syntrax which is almost 3 times the price but my shifts are now buttery smooth despite the Multitrax only having done about 5,000kms before I changed it out.

Syntrax is the "premium" oil that Docklands STI recommend.

Hmm, failed 4th synchro, AND a new clutch. How many k's have you done?

How are you finding that clutch? Mine's still fine, but has complained a bit when trying to reverse a trailer with a car on it up a slope ... :)

the cars, moreover the gearbox, has almost done 79000kms. i noticed the clutch slipping when i bought the car and it had 52000kms on it! but then it was alright for a while. That was until my motor had killed itself with lack of oil (8000kms after service, with no warning lights). had the motor replaced, and when my mechanic took the clutch out he said it wouldnt last another week! cant imagine what the previous owner would have been doing.
the new clutch is a bit heavier and can be pretty grabby when crawling through traffic. other than that its pretty good. its only a week old though so its still getting run in.

my new clutch has been done around 8k km since new, the clutch is smooth and working very well

How much is it per litre?

RRP $29.95 per L. Can get it for less if you hit supercheap on their 20% off days or if you can negotiate a better price at Repco/Bursons/Autobarn. I have found that this fluid is NEVER on sale otherwise.

I also found no matter tilting the car to whatever extremes I couldn't get more than about 3L of fluid out despite dry fill being 3.7L. Which turned out being good because for the 1L I had left over I changed the diff oil to the same. the 6MT boxes hold more but you may have the same problem with not being able to get most of the fluid out. I am advised the 6MT has two drainplugs as well.

i found that going to redline lightweight had a very good band-aid effect on the syncros in my old v6 RA box.
Is not a cheap option thou.

I wouldn't be using the Redline (shockproof) except as a last resort in high mileage gearboxes because the additives have a tendency to sludge up. Redline synthetic is OK but from what I've read it is not worth the money in Subaru gearboxes (as in other oils for the same price do a better job).
