Oil type ?

Oils ain't Oils !!!

I was following the standard servicing regime with Subaru all through the vehicle warranty but am now concious of the constant dark colour of the oils within days of changing. Standard paper element filters and standard oils seem to allow/retain high levels of "dirt" in the engine. I am looking to use an aftermarket high quality oil filter and a good quality oil.

Recently purchased a Trasco Oil Filter (not fitted yet) and am now considereing which high quality oil to use in the engine. Anyone else using the Trasco Oil filter (from x3emotorsport - Ivan Ho)?

Also considering the Redline Oils for engine (and possible the Auto transmission). Any experiences amoung the 3.0R community?

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Mark,

Clean oil is not always a good sign. Your oil should hold minute particles in suspension as that is better than them building up somewhere in the engine. Unless you live on the Birdsville Track, a couple of days is not enough for the engine to ingest significant dirt through the intake, so perhaps you might consider doing an oil flush. Be careful though, people often do more damage than good with those things.

There's a company down your way called Lubrication Management. They can test your oil and tell you exactly what is going on. The owners name is Bill and he is most helpful.

I've run Penrite HPR15 in our 3.0 since we bought it at 30k. It's just about to go in for it's 90k service and has never had excessive consumption problems. I don't use fancy filters but I do change the oil and filter every 5000ks and give it a good run through the revs every now and then as the Mrs bearly gets it above 3000.

So far mine has been on the standard stuff Denlo Parramatta put in the car - GTX I think. Car gets revved about every 15 minutes of driving on average these days :D So far, no oil consumption. Just clicked over 100k last weekend too

My car is a bit rattly, so I put diesel oil in it.

Coyote,

I looked them up and they have the Amsoil range.

Anyone else use the Amsoil products? Any recommendations?

They sell Amsoil, but I've not found that influences their oil analysis nor the quality of their advice.

What I mean is, if your current oil is performing fine, they will tell you that ... then tell you Amsoil is better ... which it probably is.
