Tuning the 3.0R by Xtreme Racing Tuning (Tuner: West_Minist)

Postby west_minist » Tue Dec 01, 2009 3:36 am

Hello guys,

I just created this topic for those you want to share their tuning experience and even gleam knowledge in tuning their ride or so forth.

Just board here today in Barbados. Its Independence :)

Anyone have their roms?

I just have the JDM that I am just going through. The fuel maps look good in high load areas, but lazy down bottom. Eco friendly. lol Thanks for the ECO/Normal button, but I see no clear definition for those settings. I see it for the turbo versions. The same goes for the Ign.

Either way, let me know if you have any roms. If you do, email them to me at socob.bb@gmail.com

Thanks in advance.

What oil and spark plugs everyone uses?

Also, what is your general maintenance schedule?

Every 3months or thereabout?

well my last service interval was less than 2 months but in that time it had done a 4000+km trip with lots of hard driving. i figured the engine deserved an oil change

My car is getting it's 50,000km service done on Friday. I've done the pollen/cabin filter myself and I'm supplying 5lt of Castrol Edge 5w30. Hope to save a few $$$ by doing this. I also fitted a HKS panel filter so no need to change that either. I would do it all myself as I did with my old WRX but I'd like to keep the book stamped not by Subaru but by a workshop who specializes in Subaru here in Wollongong who did the 37500km service. R & C Automotive. They have a good reputation unlike Tynan's who I wouldn't trust to work on a billycart.

I live in the mountains so it's all high load/high speed driving so I change oil/filter every 5000ks on mine and do full service/tune every 10000. Just keeps things nice and fresh. I also only take me about 2.5-3mths to do 5000ks.

I had mine tuned at STi in Melbourne, the infamous V-Tune, but am going to look at things a little more and as Vin is quite conservative apparently. There was certainly an improvement but with the 3.0 and good fuel I'm sure there is room for more

I can understand your need.

If there is anyone who is interesting, I have a little time this week to look over the tuning of the 3R. I am curious of the power gains after the Fuel and AVCS maps have been touch.

The fuel maps almost look prefect in high loads full throttle operation. Below is pretty lean and could cause problems. I think that is where the gains will be. Obviously, working the DBW will import feel performance and that is a quick change, but in the end, you are really looking at the overall area under the tq curves to be effective like in the graph below. Its not a 3R, but just used to show you what I mean.

The yellow line compare to the blue line is one were more intake AVCS tuning was done. As you can see the peak results are about the same, but the area under curve is far greater than that of the blue line. This give a sense of more and constant power earlier in the rpm, results is a better take off, pull or hill climbing.

It's the low end that the 3R is lacking. There is no denying that the engine has pleanty up top and loves to spin but it should have more bottom for a 3.0. The DBW is probably the biggest culprit and that certainly needs to be sorted but as shown in your graph there should be good gains in working over the Avcs. From what I remember the v-tune only addressed ign and fuel

The above graph is for a 2.0 GT.

Yes the DBW is the culprit, especially for 04+. The 07 looks terrible. But the DBW is a quick fix. THe main low end power issue is due to the Lean run. Fix that and that will help considerably.

I am hoping that someone on the forum with tools can work with me to log their car, make it run on the their fuel properly and then after that work with AVCS and non-AVCS 3R. I was waiting to drop the Hydra EMS in my 2R that has Intake AVCS, but can't do that right now for testing purposes. lol. Subaru tuned cars can be so lame sometimes. lol

Great, having the LC1, would be great.

I think these cars swtch eco/normal mode auto. In JDM we have a switch and even then, it auto select. I calling the owner now to asked if over 4400rpm, he see this. In JDM, we have lift ont eh cams. So in one def, we have lift in the ign reference, but it makes no sense in reference in the current defs from romraider, like A,B, C, D,..... But I understand what it reference for your models. For the JDM, its a little diff, but it maybe the same.

I think why many people do not tune NA is because of the lack of gains. Because myself have a 2.0R with AVCS, it makes it more interesting, although I have over 3yrs tuning all Subaru's.
