I was well aware of this issue before buying my MY09 6MT, so my first drive was up and down greenhill rd (twistee/hilly road out of Adelaide) when I picked up the car, and plenty of hills work thereon. Mine still used plenty of oil early on - I took it in to the dealer at 1400kms and they put 700mls in, then wanted me to come back regularly so they could monitor it. At 2575 it took another 500mls, 3770kms another 300mls then 200mls more at the 5000km service (est I assume). After that it setlled down pretty well - I took it back at 7000kms and it hadnt moved much and they didnt add any more. I got through to the 12500 service with it only dropping from full (well overfull - the subaru standard it seems) to about halfway between full and add. Now at 14000kms and still reading way overfull.

The guy who was monitoring mine said the harder (accel and decel) the better - they had more issues with people that just used them on the open road during run-in. The rings need a good workout to bed in properly.

Awesome... I hope this is true cos I'm getting a bit bored of driving sedately in 'Intelligent' mode :D

Could it be the thickness of the oil? i didnt really notice a drop in oil up until the first time i serviced it (around 2 weeks ago). since then, i checked it today and it was almost empty! i used 15w-40 castrol ful syn in it, but am thinking to run a heavier oil next time to try and sort it out... anyone else had a similar experience>?

15w-40 is pretty heavy for these things

got the 2000ml oil test done. first 1000km they said it was spot on which it wasn't cause they over filled it. and then 2000km one it used 700ml. so now they are monitoring it for a lil longer and take it from there they said i should be getting a new engine but we'll see how things go they have to send a letter to head office and the will get back to them

maybe i can ask for a turbo liberty engine in there if its a straight swap :)

From new, bed in the brake pads for a few 100ks, then flog the shit out of the motor!..low friction synth oils stop parts wearing/mating together and forming a perfect seal..always flogged mine from new and have never had an oil issue since. Or drop the oil from new and run a mineral based slightly heavier oil for a few thousand ks and then switch to the synth crap after, you shouldn't have any oil issues after that.
I'm now on my 4th Liberty, I enjoy the pain they cause!! The 3.6l is in a world of its own.
