Had my car serviced yesterday and was having a chat with the mechanic after and he said that he noticed when the car is cold that the rev limiter seems to kick in pretty low, as though to stop you flogging it too early, had noticed something similar to this also.
He said he hadn't really seen it in stock ECUs, but the aftermarket ones they use they set up to do so.
Has anyone else noticed this? He said to keep an eye on it, and if it happens when the car is hot it may be something different entirely.

Anyway... I got home last night and decided to give it a bit of a test, so in the garage in Neutral I gave it a bit of a boot, got up to about 5k rpm and it seemed as though the limiter cut in, now I am not too sure how smart the ECU is, but thought that maybe it cut in early so I didn't cook my car sitting in the garage, as I have gone over 5k before whilst driving with no problems.

Just thought I would post it up, see if anyone else has noticed the same or similar thing...

Yeah it does the same thing in (N) and in (P) in the 3.0's.
but when your driving its okay..
it's some sort of safety feature, i remember asking about the same question.
then Jim found out some info about it in the vehicle manual.

I'm no mechanic by any means but I would be a little bit concerned that the mechanic was hitting the rev limiter when it's cold? Even if it does kick in earlier when it's cold, 5,000rpm is still pretty high on a cold engine.

Oh, no the 5000rpm was when it was hot in Neutral, when it is cold it has a sputter at about 1500rpm if you step on it, in neutral.
I do trust that this guy wouldn't be doing anything naughty!

M3's have had this function for a while now.
