What transmission fluid do you use in 5EAT?

Postby AusPhil » Sat Feb 04, 2023 2:06 pm

Hi all. Car I just bought had good service receipts but the last transmission fluid change 15,000km ago (no filter change) they used the Penrite fully synthetic multi vehicle fluid. It seems to be going ok although I know this isn't ideal. Should I do a new 2x drain and fill with something else? But what? My 2 nearby Subaru dealers only sell ATF HP in 20L and there doesn't seem much else compatible - Valvoline Max LIfe multivehicle says it's ok for ATF HP, but is it actually any more ok than the Penrite multivehicle ATF that's been in it for 15,000k already? I can do 2x drain and fill for about $80 with the Valvoline. Oh last question, is the Ryco trans filter ok or is a genuine (at about $60!) necessary? Your advice would be appreciated

Power flush:

ATF type, look up the exact oem fluid in your year model FSM workshop manual, or even the owners manual, then find a compatible ATF using eg the manufacturer website?
Here’s a thread for GenV on the subject.

Chances are the fluid type in your box is correct enough.
