Help with idler pulley + bracket replacement on 3.6R

Postby BeefyDumDum » Fri Jun 25, 2021 1:13 pm

Belt worn through, bought new belt, go to fit and... oops. Looks like a bearing failure (imo that's a design fault at less than 150,000km, but that's life) heated up the seals, bolt and bracket - the whole lot was nicely sintered together. Broke the engine cover clips getting it off too :angry2:

Gory details:

Remaining compressor stay:

So I think I'll need all the stuff in the red circles below
  • AC Compressor Stay
  • Idler Pulley
  • Idler Pulley Cover
  • Idler Pulley Bolt
And may as well get a new tensioner pulley while I'm at it.

Parts in question:

I have a couple of noobish questions, hoping someone can help me out with some pointers?

  • Do I just call Subaru for new OEM or are there better aftermarket ones available? I read another post here that mentioned double-bearing pulleys, but my google-fu has been weak in finding where to buy...
  • How do I undo the bolt on the tensioner pulley (I don't want to damage the springs etc.)? As per normal? Is it treated special in that it's sprung?
  • Was thinking of trying Bursons but I'd prefer to have the part numbers/shopping list together. Is a VIN in partsouq adequate/reliable?
  • In removing the melted AC compressor stay, can I just unbolt the compressor, alternator and stay, then slip it out? I'd really rather avoid AC re-gas as I live a long way from a HVAC

Thanks y'all, so thankful this community exists!

Still not getting reply notifications, but I did manage to first order a 4th gen AC compressor bracket from Sydney (they thought it would fit, nice guys though, zero hassle return), send that back, and then caved to a $350 bracket, bolt and pulley cover from Subaru (which I will add, came new and arrived fast). Oof the spendies.

Managed to pick up two new pulleys from Bursons for $140, slip it all in without de-gassing the AC and bingo we got ourselves a car again. :D

Just if anyone else runs into the problem/design fault in the meantime, pretty much every Subaru-carrying wrecker listed on Google maps in Melbourne's north, east and southeast suburbs, is pretty much shit out of brackets. Covid isn't helping because the auctions and wrecking isn't happening, same deal now up in Sydney, where there are zero brackets kicking around and one lonely Gen 4 bracket left (assuming they didn't manage to sell it same-day like they did the only one before that). YMMV, but until people start crashing cars again and the parts industry catches up, you may waste less time just paying through the nose at Subaru parts (they had a bunch of brackets arrive recently, so at least they aren't ship-in anymore).
