200K service - what’s on the list....

Postby Tonic » Sun Sep 13, 2020 3:26 pm

So the 3RB is hitting the 200K service and is 10 years old so it is time for a major service to get it through the next 3 years....another 100K!

After consideration I am not going down the modification route so I really just want to get a few more kms/years out of it before perhaps selling it as a project car. That said with the kms I travel (and speeds) it needs to be in top condition.

Wheels and Suspension:
Don’t think there is anything here. Control arm bushes changed this year, no leaks from the shocks, brake pads recently replaced and discs are nice and smooth and unwarned.

Body:
I drive this thing in the hinterland so the scratches and scrapes will stay! But the driver seat has collapsed on the left which is forum reported as probably a broken bracket rivet/weld. So the garage will be charged with fixing that.

Gearbox:
Getting a crunch in 5th on changes above about 3,500 but a rebuild is too much at this stage ie while it is drivable. If I destroy it then I can look at the rebuild. In the meantime the reverse lock out is gone so Corgiwerx has furnished me with new bushes and a short shifter kit which will be done at service.

Fluids:
Complete change of all fluids - radiator, diff, gearbox, engine and brake. Am I missing anywhere?

Engine:
Ok the main thing I want to keep on song. Has been a great engine but valve seals are probably worn. Don’t really want to rebuild upper engine and Head Gasket seems OK but Should I get it changed? If so then I would look at new top end (or is that side end on the H6?).

Spark plugs of course.

Belt and front of engine pulleys (belt gets done every 50K but pulleys are still original!)..... And while they are there I am thinking the timing chain and tensioner..(both original).

Usual oil filter and air filters are due.

Hoses seem fine and A/C is working well.

What else should be looked at/updated?

Horizontal wheel change for a horizontal engine car? Is that how we are supposed to do it? :D :D :D

Pull all the engine sensor plugs and harness connector to check for oil.
Oil can travel through the loom all the way to the ecu.

200-300k is where all the seals, gaskets and orings start to perish, so I’d consider at least pressure testing the inlet tract and crank case.
Ime, just removing the inlet manifold and replacing everything perishable wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Ok so job done. Invoiced $1,669 which is about what I expected.
Corgi’s bushes are in. Gear changes like new.
Drive belt done and pulleys got new bearings. One was ordinary apparently.
All new fluids, including coolant.
No oil around sensors at all apparently.
Of note was the gearbox oil was low and replaced. Since the replace the crunch going from 4th to 5 th has gone! So maybe no new gearbox required at all! Probably haven’t done this oil since 100Kkm so a lesson learnt.
New plugs, filters etc.
Chain and tensioner checked and apparently all good as is.
Compression test showed between 187 and 195 across the cylinders (each one shown on invoice). So not too bad for 200Kkm on them.
Apart from that a couple of CV boots.

Things to keep an eye on include lower control arm bushes. I am pretty sure I replaced this with Whiteline ones not that long ago!!!
Rocker cover gasket starting to week. Will probably do that next time.

Rear trans mount bushes. When it was up in the air I noticed these... well one anyway. Will do both soon. Looks like a straight forward job.

Well stuffed if I can get the photo loaded. File too big and iPad photo only gets down to 1.2mb ... about 5 times the max allowed.
So sorry no invoice.

You can try screen shotting it multiple times and crop it landscape to portait each time :P

If you're doing all 4 diff bushes, need a cups and allthread kit to do the rears in car.
Local mechanic did mine with WL solids all round: awesome!

I hope you had the heater core flushed: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=36458

Yeah tried the crop and shoot trick but the writing became illegible.

New fluids all around including radiator. Flushed ? Not sure about that but certainly drained.

He flushed the gearbox oil.

I guess I can call this stage 2of the 200kkm service.

New group n transmission mount and white line rubber bits on bracket. New front wheel hubs, new nolathane front lower control arm bushes (front and back) and new pins. And seeing another 8kkm on the clock got a minor service while it was there.

All up another $1,500 in there but should be right for a while now.

First impressions are I can feel there is more feedback through the wheel... like you can feel the silicon rather than what was rubber.

Gear changes are even more defined (First service got new gear change bushes) and it feels as tight and accurate as new.
