3RB Oil change, more then 5L's?

Not sure if this has been posted before for a 3RB, but the other day went for an oil change. Up on the hoist and removed the under protection thingy (dunno what it is called?).

Drained the oil and then replaced the filter. Then the new oil went in. Poured the entire 5L into the engine, checked and re-checked... still not up to the F mark on th dip stick.

Drove home, let it cool and checked the next morning, still not to the F mark, had to add abit more oil.

Anyone else experience this when doing their own oil changes?

Do the 3L's always take this much oil? I'd say it would be about 5.5 - 6 litres to completely replace the oil.

From the US Legacy workshop manual

Engine oil capacity
2.5 L model
Upper level:
Approx. 4.0 L (4.2 US qt, 3.5 Imp qt)
Lower level:
Approx. 3.0 L (3.2 US qt, 2.6 Imp qt)
3.0 L model
Upper level:
Approx. 5.5 L (5.8 US qt, 4.8 Imp qt)
Lower level:
Approx. 4.5 L (4.8 US qt, 4.0 Imp qt)

You will also use more if you replace the oil filter

Agree with ya there... I have experienced your same issues when replacing my engine oil... it took about 5.5 litres..

The H6's also do chew up a bit of fuel during the wear in period, so it's always handy to have extra oil around

What do call wear in period? Mine has just tipped 18,000k's and I'm still topping it up every couple of weeks (only slightly). I do a lot of driving as i use the car for work. Probabaly about 400-500km's per week.

You should start buying your oil in barrels, not quarts.

too funny, all you had to do was check the owners manual and it would of told you how may litres of oil you need to fill up.

I've only ever bought oil for my car once.
Ever since, I've taken it back to the dealer I bought it from for them to top it up, which is part of the reason they were so ready to suggest an engine swap when it kept drinking oil, because they had precise records on how much it had used.
(Oh, and they've never charged me for these top-ups between services. I guess they will once my warranty runs out next March.)

Yeah.. a quick check of the owners manual would have eliminated that little surprise. It's not unusual for a 6 cyl to need more than 5L on a dry fill (ie: incl filter change).

I use a 5W-40 synthetic oil. Buy two bottles for the first fill, and then only need to buy one additional bottle for each of the next 3 to 4 fills.

48,000km on the clock and it doesn't drink a drop. I'm amazed some of you guys are still using a little oil. Maybe you need to take your car to the track and give it a good hard workout to bed those rings in!

Cheers,
Deucer.
