3.0 H6 Surge tank - inner shell?

Postby mogtribe » Thu Nov 16, 2017 4:50 pm

Hi all,

My 2005 3.0R Spec-B manual has developed a 'rattling' noise under full throttle acceleration when going up a hill. It's most noticeable around 3000rpm. From what I've read I'm pretty sure it's pinging. The car is stock apart from a KiDo tune.

After reading through some threads I checked my surge tank (also referred to as inlet plenum, airbox etc) and noticed it was cracked.

Anyway I picked up a replacement tank from a wrecker today. When I got it home it I noticed that mine has a kind of inner plastic shell with holes in it. The one I bough today doesn't have the shell.

Is the shell supposed to be there? Do all 3 litre H6's have them, or does it depend on the particular model?

I didn't try too hard but it doesn't look like it can be removed. I've installed the new box so will keep an ear out for the noise.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

My cracked unit on the left, replacement on the right.

My unit cracked along the top just like yours has appeared to have done?

I put a bead of silastic along the crack and have not had an issue since.
yes, mine also has teh white plastic inner insert.

Thanks for that.

Anyone not have the inner shell in theirs?

I'm also wondering if the owner of the previous tank may have removed the shell. Would there be any benefit in doing so?

Mine doesn't have one. Was surprised when I saw yours.

Mine is built in second half (Sept?) of 2005, MY06 model.

Can't see a benefit in removing it, would imagine there is a benefit at high rpm to have the airflow guided as it is on the inside and outside of the curve. Might have to look out for one.

Btw, I tried to get a new unit for a while there from partsouq.com before getting it plastic welded and noticed that it lists a revised part number - wonder which one is which?

My original tank (with inner shell) is stamped R-009, car is an MY06 with a Jul 2005 build date.

The replacement tank (without inner shell) is stamped R-016

Had a look on Partsouq.com and could see two variants like you said, although no way of matching them up to the R-009 and 016 numbers...

Maybe this mystery isn't supposed to be solved :?: :?:

When I did my clutch yesterday, can confirm that my 2005MY Spec-B has the inner thing inside the airbox.
