3.0R secondary cat gutting?

Postby Mariano » Wed Dec 28, 2016 3:35 am

I have legacy 3.0R 6mt, stainless cat-back exhaust with resonator in middle pipe. It`s a bit too quiet. Theres no drone because resonator, but I dont want to delete it. How it would sound with gutted secondary (3rd) cat? Cut it open, gut it and weld shut? I dont want any drone or rasp.

Ok, now I know. It was pretty easy to do, cut open, drop catalyst, weld shut. Welding was difficult because material is some kind of stainless, had to weld it with normal steel mig. Exhaust sounds perfect now, little bit more raw and louder, like it a lot. No drone or raspy at all. Catalyst was very good condition inside, no cracks or melting. Biggest surprise was difference in performace, I did`t expect any gains. Car pulls MUCH more freely and is quicker to pick up revs. 4th gear is where you can really feel it. Lot more torque 2000-3000rpm in any gear. 6th gear cruising is easy, barely need to touch accelerator. I think it will get better MPG. I highly recommend to do this. I have some pictures also. Sorry for rusty english. :D

Nice little project. How is the MPG doing with city and freeway driving?

Avarage consumption was 10.8 summer/winter time. After cat delete 10.2l/100km. It is winter now and I have eberspacher heater using gasoline, so I think summer consumption will be under 10l/100km. Cat was perfect condition, I dont understand what is point secondary cat if car passes emission tests. Zero negative effect with this mod. Just gut cat, dont replace it with some cheap pipe. Stock piping is very high quality and inside looked like very good free flowing desing.
