Planning an Upgrade to the Idler Pulleys

Postby BillyCorgi » Thu Jun 23, 2016 3:51 pm

CorgiWerx is planning an upgrade to the Idler Pulleys bearings on the 3.0R H6 accessory belt.

The standard Idler Pulleys for the accessory belt use a 6203.2RS single row deep groove ball bearing, 40mm OD x 17mm ID x 12mm W
While these are okay for the purpose, being a single row they steadily lose their rigidity, become loose and begin to wobble.
When the pulley wobbles it emits and unpleasant sound and accelerates wear of the grooves in the poly-V belt.

The idler pulley under the alternator is the more highly stressed of the two, and its bearing wears at a greater rate.
Item #5 below

There is double row angular contact bearing of identical OD and ID, 5203.2RS
Being double row, it will be less prone to inner and out race “wobble” as it wears.
This bearing will be trialled to see if it can offer superior rigidity over the standard bearing.

Great research Peter! and good on you for trialing this bearing, let us know how you go. That metal screach on start up is painful especially in winter, it seems to be worse at this time of year.

Okay, after waiting for the missing bearings to arrive, and then waiting for another 6PK1590 belt (because applegeek897 [or James] bought the first one off me), finally the bearings and belts have arrived!

Time to fit the new upgraded bearings and install a new belt.

Time for a new belt (was only changed last year?)

You need to fashion a 5mm longer Flange Head Screw for the Pulley on the Swinging Tensioner Arm.
(Note, the other stationary pulley is fine, the existing screw has plenty of thread engagement)

For those who may be interested, the bearings came from Mike at zaccsbearings off ebay.

He has Chinese made bearings and Japanese made bearings in stock. I chose the Japanese made bearings for the few extra dollars.

POST SCRIPT
Sounds much better.
That Rat.t.t.t.t.t.t.t.t.t rasp accelerating off idle had disappeared.
The bearings are more solid, correcting the idler pulley wobble causing the rasp.
More nicerer!

Good work as always Peter! Will definitely be doing this to try eliminate that screech on start up. What is the required length/specs for the new bolt?

5mm longer than before.
New thread length 35mm. You could use a 40mm screw and shorten it.
I made mine from a 40mm screw plus a flange nut, that is all I had? you can see this if you look closely.
Just make sure the diameter of the flange is greater than 17mm.
And beware of the lose nut in the back of the tensioner pulley. Catch it before it falls out onto block.

Can confirm this is a beach if you drop the nut.. :/ Put a rag or something underneath the nut as a worst case scenario, as dropping the nut results in a lot of cursing and time spent with a magnetic tool and claw to retrieve it from behind the timing case.

Thanks for the write up and the tips. I replaced with the same bearings but just went to local CBC Bearing place here in Adelaide and paid $38 each (made in Japan) and $6 at Bunnings for the 10x40mm 15metric thread high tensile nut and bolt set.
Still have a noise from either alternator or power steer bearings???
