Water pump replacement cost

Postby W4GNIT » Tue Mar 01, 2016 3:31 pm

Hi guys,

Just got car serviced. Mechanic says there is a slight leak from the water pump, he said it was small enough to keep driving provided I keep an eye on coolant levels but stressed it needs to be done sooner rather than later. He fluffed around but never gave me a price estimate for the job only saying that it would be a full days labour.

Any idea what its going to cost me? Also are there any parts in the area I should be getting him to change/upgrade while he is in there to make the engine more bulletproof?

Cheers,

Steve

Retail?
$250 for the pump and eight hours labour.
Its a H6, so the front aluminium cover comes off the engine and the left-bank timing chain comes off (or as a minimum is loosened)

Pumps can be quite cheap, but maybe a decent dose of labour is involved

Re: H6 Water pump setup

Starting new threads is over-rated...?

I am looking at a new water pump in box new from Subaru (by looking at, I mean it's in my hands). From a mechanical point of view, the impeller design is quite poor, so I am now highly curious to see if the factory pump looks the same as this replacement pump I have purchased, or if Subaru have cheapened out on this replacement part...?
Wondering if anyone has a FACTORY H6 pump that they can share a photo of, impeller view only?
...and also a photo of the chamber behind the pump, for me to get a better understanding before I pull mine apart?

Thanks in advance...

cheers, Brian

Re: Water pump impeller design

Thanks Peter, but that is not quite what I meant.

I have exactly that box and that part in my hand, but what I am curious to know, is if the pump fitted in the factory (that I will see when I disassemble the motor) looks exactly like that replacement part in terms of the impeller design?

I read on another thread from a few years ago that you were looking at doing exchange H6 motors, so I guess you have taken these water pumps out a few times, and I know you are a details guy :),
so can you answer that question for me, if the factory-fitted pump has an identical impeller to the replacement part?
