3.0R-B engine swap - outback engine do the trick?

Postby DAL32 » Mon Feb 29, 2016 10:10 pm

So I've bought myself a dud. Bearing/s shot on my H6.

I'm looking at a replacement engine. I've got a 2004 R-B, the engine to replace with is a 2004 Outback. I googled and found one guy putting a 2006 liberty engine into a 2004 outback and it all worked with one small wiring change.

Google yielded F all, I've read here the engines should at least be the same year model. They have the same power output etc and auto v manual engine doesn't seem to make a difference, it seems.

I can't see these being materially different - you're in the same generation, same chassis, same engine. Worst case you might have to swap some things from the old engine.

While I can't guarantee it will work, I'd be amazed if it didn't go right in with possibly some minor modifications.

The only "issue" is the Outback 3.0 was auto only so if your car is manual you're going to have to swap the flex plate for the flywheel etc.

Did you work out what totalled the bearings? Normally it is lack of lubricant at some point not far back in its life

Is there a way to tell?

I scoured the service history for clues, and I can't be sure but there may have been a missing receipt in there, as the service sticker says next due 195,500. No way of knowing if the previous owner wasn't up with the oil chewing nature of the h6. But I checked the oil when I inspected and seemed ok to me.

Oh well, no use playing detective, I'll just keep the old lump just in case I ever need it again

Got the car back last night and all went off without a hitch.

Got a whole bunch of stuff done at the same time, so really it's like a major service and engine replacement.

Can't wait to change the wheels to 18" and get stuck into some mountain drives
