Clutch advice

Postby boltz » Sun Feb 21, 2016 9:42 pm

Hi all, Our 3.0R-B won't go into 1st or reverse on start up. If it's not already in gear on start up, you have to turn it off, put it into gear and start up with the clutch in.
It gets easier as it warms up. The local Subaru dealer workshop told my wife it needs a new clutch, but I want to be sure before I pull the gearbox out.
It's only done 122 000km with one elderly owner, so I'm surprised that the clutch would be shagged already
The clutch also shows no signs of slipping.
As an aside, I have changed the gearbox oil to Nulon full synthetic 75W-90 and added a tube of Nulon G70, but this made no difference.

Dragging Clutch?????

The above diagnostic table for dragging clutch would be good for a 5MT, as these are a straight cut dog box for reverse gear.
It may not work that well for a 6MT Spec-B Box as reverse gear is in constant mesh with synchromesh (You can pull reverse gear on the move)

Sounds like a dragging clutch, that is, the clutch disc binding to the spline on the input shaft of the gearbox, or pilot bearing shagged?
If so, needs attention if it is going to be fixed.
It would be false economy not to replace the clutch while the gearbox and engine are separated to rectify the issue.

Thanks Billy Corgi.
It does sound like dragging clutch.
It apparently sat for around 6 months (deceased estate), so rusty spline or pilot bearing a good possibility.
