I recently bought a h6 03 outback with a known blown head gasket, I'm wondering if I should do the head gasket or buy a new engine?
Beautiful little car, everything else works, 200,000kms on the clock.

MY03, so it is a Gen3 derivative Outback.
H6 engine with alloy inlet manifold.
If the car has a good service history do the head gaskets.
Are you intending to do them yourself or get a workshop to do the business?

A derivative outback? I don't understand.

No service history, oil in the engine is quite black so I suspect not that well maintained and yes I was going to find the hg guide somewhere on the net n give it ago myself. Or replace the engine myself.

Ok I found threads exactly the same as mine.. How do I know if anything else is damaged? Pull it apart?
I'm no mechanic but I'm willing to learn n I can c that doing a hg is better then a new engine if the engine is ok.

The first Outback was built on the Gen2 Liberty Wagon platform. Some people refer to this as the Gen1 Outback.
Then, the second series Outback is sometimes referred to as the Gen 2 is built on the Liberty Gen3 platform.
So, an MY03 outback is DERIVED from the Liberty Gen3 Platform.

It's circa $3k to do the h6 HG's.

I understand the costs involved and its around $1500 if I pull the engine out myself n deliver to the shop.
I'm wanting to do as much myself as possible but I'm still unsure whether to do the hg or replace the engine?

Take it to the workshop, or DIY. Then drop it in.
That would leave you with less downtime and also if you DIY and fail you can have a second chance.

If all goes well then just sell the spare one.

It's nice to have a second one on hand to scavenge parts off of as well. Better than ordering and waiting for odd bits to be delivered.

I would imagine you could just swap the inlet manifold over if it turned out to be the wrong one?

I guess that's a no.

Well that would make sense otherwise it would be easier to supercharge those that are plastic with a simple swap if such a thing was that easy.
