3.0rb clutch, gearbox and diff

Postby minigoat » Fri Oct 02, 2015 5:13 pm

So my gearbox has a bit of a grind in 4th and 5th, only makes itself known after approx 30 min of driving, and i also get the dreaded clunk while doing sharp turns in a carpark. Im assuming this would be my synchros and centre diff on the way out.

My question is, does anyone know of any decent places in brisbane to get this work done, and any reccomendations for a new clutch and what kind of diff I should be looking at?

Also after a rough cost if anyone has had any similiar work done in the past?

Cheers guys.

Thread somewhere else i think. Clunk maybe viscous coupling ... A $1,000 part.

As to where?

If you have time on your side, I would follow this thread and contact BillyCorgi re the centre diff: http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=31089

minigoat, what is the transmission code of your vehicle?
It should be on the label on the left hand side front strut tower, just under the front bonnet.
Being a 2004 model it should be TY856WVBAA for Liberty Spec B MY05.
These use a 38913AA112 Centre Differential.

Where are you located.
I am looking for a 6MT or 5MT to be a donor car for the first field trial vehicle.
Sydney or close is good?

While turning, that could be a worn out CV joint (that is if it's coming from the front)

Having replaced both the centre differential and the front drive shafts over the last 12 months (on different cars).....

The CV joints start to give a light-hollow clackity-clackity-clackity-clack sound when accelerating from rest during a right hand turn (say).
The CV joint will go clackity-clack hot or cold.

The centre diff gives a substantial BANG as the wheel hops when manoeuvring at near full lock like when turning into a parking space in a car park or doing a reverse park.
The centre diff will not do anything when cold, however will appear when fully warmed up.

Yep that is mine Peter. Did one cv because the boot split but quickly went to the viscous coupling. Does not repairing cause any further parts damage?

If you do not replace the centre diff you can experience drive line wind up, where the front and rear drive systems fight against each other.
The extreme end result is broken main shafts in the gearbox and/or smashed transfer gears.

Here is an example of a smashed gearbox shaft in a VW T3 Synchro as a result of a bound up viscous centre coupling.
