need mechanical advice before i buy a b spec.

Postby Deitikah » Tue Sep 08, 2015 7:26 pm

Hi. I've got my heart set on buying a gen 4 bspec in the near future, but I need some info to help me in my search.
1- how many kms is too many if they haven't got the log book?
2 - I've seen a few advertised with "timing belt done recently, have receipts" don't all b specs have the chain?

Thanks for your help

"Spec B" is just a spec level.
All pre-facelift (MY04-06) "spec B" liberties are H6 3L
All post facelift (MY07-09) GTs are "spec B"
Not all post facelift H6s are "spec B"

Hope this helps

1. regular servicing is key - much more important than kms. it's hard to judge.

2. All H6 are chain, yes

BC - I think that 1 kilometre without a log book would be too many

2 - I've seen a few advertised with "timing belt done recently, have receipts" don't all b specs have the chain?
BC - The 3.0R six cylinder engine had chains.
However there are turbocharged GT Spec-B post facelift that have the EJ25 turbo engine and have belts

Thanks for your help

thanks for clarifying, I should have been a bit more specific then - I'm looking for a 2004-2006 Liberty 3.0L spec b, and these are what I've been looking at.

Can good servicing in the last 3-5 years make up for unknown history before that?

Not all MY07 GTs are "spec B". Note the distinct lack of a spec B bumper on this MY07 Premium Pack GT.

DO NOT BUY ONE IF YOU THINK YOU CAN NEGLECT IT OR IF IT HAS BEEN NEGLECTED. THEY ARE A PRECISION INSTRUMENT AND NEED TO BE TREATED ACCORDINGLY. DO SO, AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED.

So I've found an 06 blitzen that i really like, 200 000km just ticked over and about to have its major service before sale. Full log book and everything looks good EXCEPT it's an auto. :? Can the auto be just as much fun as a manual?
From what i understand the blitzen is a cosmetic upgrade to the 3.0L h6 B Spec, is that right?

Autos will not be as 'fun' as manuals and you lose the direct drive feeling (feels smoother/slower compared to a manual with the same acceleration).

The 5eat is one of the best autos I've ever driven though, up there with the DSG. If it's a postFL, even better.

I had a preFL tbSti with a 5eat and when it was up for sale, the first person to inspect it, bought it. He was looking for a manual wagon, but was so impressed with auto sedan that he bought it

The lib I have now makes over double the factory power and it's an auto...and it's very fun. I would say at lower power levels the manual 'feels' more impressive. And when people compare autos with manuals - they for some reason compare the manual in 2/3rd to an auto in D (which sits in a higher gear 4/5th to save fuel), drop the auto into 2nd/3rd for a real comparison...

A test drive should tell you everything you need to know about the 'fun' factor.

Test drive isn't an option for this one unfortunately, as it's interstate. I'm going to get an nrma inspection and if all is good, fly down to pick it up and drive her home.

Also, are there any known issues with this model that i should be aware of?

headgaskets, also headgaskets, and headgaskets.

Also knocking bilsteins, worn out lower control arm bushes, probably ball joints, bits and pieces. Check the servicing history.
