MY07 3.0r - 1500km drive after months without being driven..

Postby rhysneilblack » Mon Aug 24, 2015 11:07 am

Hey Guys,

Im in the process of planning a long drive from Lismore NSW to Melboune in 2 weeks to get my beloved B-Spec.
Frankly, i cant wait to get back in the beast for the trip!!!
I have not been driving the car and it has been left to sit for a few months so I figured i better go get it!

Just wondering what are a few things I should be checking before i make the 1500km drive,
I will be putting new tires on her and a change of oil and filter, just worried about it as the car has 200+ thousand kms on the clock.

Thanks in advance!

Hey man,

Not sure about anything really specific to a Subaru, but I'd go over things like:

- Oil
- Filters
- Check for any leaks
- Belt conditions
- Tyres
- Battery
- Brake pads
- Lights

Sorry if it sounds like a dumb response, was thinking about it and that's about all I could come up with!

As already mentioned, check oil, tyre pressures etc... I would add checking coolant to that list, make sure you let the car run for a while to warm up and as it's been sitting for a while I would recommend not flogging it too hard. Maybe give the brakes a bit of a bed in too, much the same as you would after fitting new pads, make sure the rotors have had time to warm up a bit first. Other than that if all the servicing and mechanics were good prior I wouldn't think you should have any issues :)

Roger that guys!! :D
After 6 months without driving it, it will be hard to go steady but I'm sure I'll limit it back a notch!

I have had a mate start it up every week or so since I left it!

Anyone made the journey from Gold Coast to melbourne or back?
Some tips on which roads to take to shorten the trip would be great!

I would suggest coming down NSW to Sydney inland via the New England Highway, but think that works better when coming from Brisbane, not sure if there is a local connecting road out of the Gold Coast??

Re the trip, handy hint: take some "crunchy" snacks, like rice crackers/mix, biscuits, chips etc - the action of eating plus the crunching sound in your head will stimulate you and help keep you alert. That said, DON'T PUSH IT, when you get tired, have a rest. :)

(And the day after you get back - go for a run to make up for all the bisuits and truckstop-diner burgers you've had :) )

Yeah I got told chips and chewing gum was good on long trips.

But I won't be able to pass a maccas without stopping for a cheese burger...

I'm just too keen to get the lib back and actually spend some money on it!
Haha it's been to long.

Its going to be a loooong trip at 90km/h......or can red p platers do 100km/h now???

if you have a gps that can show you your real speed, use it. The gen 4 speedos are known to read a bit high. 90km/h on the speedo could be as low as 82 or 83km/h real speed. It will save you time on the road - without getting you booked

Ill have my greens for the drive so i wont have to worry about 90km/h...

i was really considering going west via Dubbo and staying off the pacific highway, that way im sure i wont encounter as many road works and other drivers...
but that means no 24hr petrol stations and what not..
im yet to sort out which way to go!

Thanks for the tips!

If you're going that way, watch out for those pesky roos and wombats, and other forms of FAAAR less intelligent wildlife...

I would personally take the route which has the most amount of traffic/servos and what not.
After not driving the car for so long just to play it safe, if something happens as least you might be able to find a service station.

If you don't mind me asking, which state doesn't allow Red P-platers to do 100kph?
