Dumb Questions Re: Cams

Hey All,

As my title suggests im pretty much about to ask some questions based off the 0% knowledge i have on the subject so here goes haha.

I want to get the whole "lumpy cam" thing going on my Spec B liberty, yet i have no idea on a few things;

- I don't know what sort of products to search for, Performance camshafts is what i thought it would be.

- Can you buy them off the shelf or do i have to get custom made ones ? I see price for shelf kits can be $500-$1000 and customs are just.... dayum...

- Do i even need to get the cams to make the lumpy idle or can you just get that sound via a tune ( i have heard you can tune that in )

- Am i even on the right track in my research haha

I will be buying a raptor SC kit around the end of year so i will be hoping to get the cams/sc/tune in around the same time.

Anthony

Your 3.0R engine has variable intake valve timing and lift.
The intake cam system was designed by Porsche.
You should not need to touch the camshafts.
Consider to get a Kido tune first.

I'd written three different responses about lumpy cams, 253s, and posing when I realised you are probably talking about the sound WRXs make. That has nothing to do with the cams but more the exhaust system and the fact that the exhaust manifold runners are an uneven length to try and create a more consistent exhaust flow to reduce turbo lag. That's a very basic explanation but that's the sound you are hearing.
The EZ30 is an entirely different animal and the only similarity is that both engines are Boxers. When done properly the EZ emits a howl reminiscent of a 911 due in no small way to Porsche's influence in it's design. Trying to get an EZ to sound like a 20yo inefficient WRX will be undoing all that good work especially if you are thinking of supercharging. Save your coin, get the SC kit and a proper exhaust and leave all the crew driving old WRXs sitting at the lights wishing their cars sounded as sweet as yours.

When I first got my 3.0R, I always liked the sound that Subarus are associated with and was curious as to why the H6 didn't sound like that at all, in fact, the H6 didn't make much of a sound at all! Well, she did inside the car when you planted your foot. I started a bit of a journey to make the car go faster more than sound at first.

What I did first was change the headers and cats. I stuck hiflow cats in (100cell) but do kinda regret that. As soon as the headers and cats went in (cats are Xforce) a huge amount of raspiness and overall and the car sounded really bad. I had some work done to put in a couple resonators before the collector and it got rid of a lot of the rasp.

This was with a the 3rd cat deleted but the rest of the exhaust was stock. Then came the catback, also from Xforce. I ended up only using the Y pipe and mufflers from that, the Xforce resonator is pretty useless. I replaced that with a larger, 22" resonator. Car started to sound better. I probably would not recommend Xforce as brand though!

At the same time I was messing around with the exhaust was tuning.

In addition to the actual exhaust, what I've found changes the tone of the exhaust is the tune and also the fuel type. In NZ you can't get the fancy stuff (easily) so I'm running on Gull Force 10 and that has actually removed the last of the raspiness I had (I was using Shell 95 before).

Anyways, long story short - as Pete and Adrian have said, the H6 is a beautiful engine and the sound it produces is nothing like a WRX type sound. In my opinion it's way better and she really does howl when she's free breathing. I have to get my butt in gear and get some videos of what my car sounds like, but it's pretty awesome. There are various clips of what she sounds like opened up online though.

When I take her up to 6k and beyond through real twisty roads - it is an absolute blast.

As Pete mentioned - look into tuning as a first step. You can get a lot of extra performance with just a tune. I would then definitely look at the exhaust before the sc install as that's generally a requirement of the sc kit anyways.

Not looking at the actual note/ volume coming from the exhaust, i already have a full exhaust system and im happy with the sound.

I'm after the sound that cams bring while idleing, most commonly heard on V8's but you can get a similar sound on other cars.

Here's the idle sound on a rexy.

I literally am just doing this as a poser, if the price is good im not fussed on the cams making performance i just want the sound haha

When I was a youngster and you wanted a lumpy idle to impress, you would pull out the choke?
Ah, take me back to Big Chief on Parramatta Road next to Duck Creek.
Anyone else here remember those days?

10 degrees of cam advance at idle, will give the brap brap noise you crave

Is there any dangers to doing this?

Hey you were there too! I remember Big Chief fondly, Saturday Night drive to the City always started at Big Chiefs.

And I though I was the only Old Bloke on this forum!

Thanks for the memories.

O2 sensor eater and poor vacuum at idle

So O2 sensor destruction should happen with software advance OR with a permanent cam timing regrind?

Both, the overlap has fuel ignition in the manifold.

Ask late model V8 guys with the Megadeath cam who long their O2 sensors last

Thanks Matt,
So the desire for a lumpy camshaft is a folly?
Better "pull the choke out"?
