The "this" is the electrical connector to the pressure switch on the power stearing pump.
The "what" is that it provides a signal to the ECU that the pressure is rising in the pump.
The 'why" is the ECU will increase the idle speed to prevent the engine from stalling.

The circuit prevents the engine from stalling when manoeuvring the car at low speed when idling.

Just checked my 3.0R
There is a screw in pressure switch with flying lead electrical connector on the back of the power steering pump.
The flying lead is tethered into a hole on the rear of the PS body.
The connector you show in the first picture plugs into this socket.

Is the connector in the second picture the same connector as shown in the first?

Well, your pump does not appear from the photographs to have the Pressure Switch fitted?
No much more I can help you with there.
Cheers!

What does the soft black tube connect to?
Is there another wire lost inside the soft black tube?

On my pump there is a piece of black electrical spaghetti (a.k.a. soft black tube) between the body of the pressure switch and the electrical socket. The connecting wire runs inside.
Maybe the head of the electrical socket has been pulled off by a previously careless service technician?
The worm drive clamp on the hose (as shown in picture) is not standard, suggesting that someone has performed some level of servicing on the PS pump system? Maybe?

well spotted/ re the hose clamp I thought the same/- in fact where the engine cover sits at that point over the top ps hose, it doesn't line up/- therefor stops the engine cover sitting flush ie :where the hose should sit in the cutaway over the engine cover.

the black spag tube doesn't look like it does anything,?????? im a little stumped, I havnt seen this b4 , im sure its as you said prev mate.

The FSM shows that the H6 PS Pump and the H4 PS Pump are different.
Maybe if your pump hose does not fit properly with the engine cove an H4 pump has been installed on your engine??

Checking FSM now
Back soon!

Back now.....
The pumps appear to be same or similar, they use a similar mounting bolt pattern, however the H6 pump has higher volume capacity.
The pumps have different drive pulleys (as they use different belts) and also have different hose connector ports.

mmm interesting ..

I too am searching...

PS the reason I looked was that the car seemed to have an oily or burning smell radiating out from it and I was checking if it was leaking any oil or fluid.??

iv been told by you or some one on here that these cars do run hot but the smell was what brought my attention,,

Junior's Outback had a horrible smell and it turned out to be a torn inner driveshaft boot leaking onto the exhaust?
Just thought that I would mention.

The hoseclamp is to help prevent air entering the hose as it hardens over time and the factory clamp becomes insufficient. A thread here somewhere about it
