Help-going through coolant h6 2005 140000klms

Postby Dg6000 » Wed May 20, 2015 7:01 am

Got my lib serviced 2 weeks ago, mechanic said that I could be burning coolant through head gasket or a crack and big cost (thousands) to fix or rebuild. Car is humming after a retune by Matt and cannot notice any loss of power. After 2 weeks the coolant has gone down to min level.

really devo cause I love driving this car, has anyone been through this?

Also it sounds like it would be cheaper to buy another engine than fix?

Any advice from forum members would be appreciated

If it's a head gasket there will be bubbles in the coolant.

If you buy a new engine there's one on eBay atm for about $1600 with 150k kms, no altenator or anything but it should do the job for you

Has he done a pressure test to see if it isn't as simple as a radiator hose or cracked end tank on the radiator itself?

Have you started using the heater recently ? Just wondering if when they serviced it did they flush the coolant through properly ? The reason I ask is that my son had his H6 Liberty serviced at Subaru a while back and when he got it back it was making a trickling sound in behind the dash, this turned out to be coolant trickling in through the heater hoses as it hadn't been refilled correctly :( When he checked his coolant it was down a fair bit too, he topped it up and then turned on the heater to open it up and it drew coolant through as it should and the trickling sound went away :) If you haven't already try running the car with the heater on for a while and then recheck your coolant level. His coolant level has now stabilised but was up and down a bit during the process. Hopefully it's nothing too serious

I had to do mine, quite happy to have done the gaskets even tho its quite a cost. The thing with a replacement engine - when is it going to need gaskets done?? Wouldnt be fun if your new motor needed gaskets 3 weeks down the track.

When the gaskets are done, they are done and you have the peace of mind, another motor with 150K km on it is just ready for needing a set lol

If they suspect head gasket/leak, why didn't they do a tee-kay test/compression test and pressure test ? To varify instead of guessing. I would also suggest doing a pressure test on your radiator cap, could be the cause and it's a cheap fix.
If it does have a small leak at the head can always add chemi weld/stop leak, this could fix it or very least buy you time.

FYI: The O2 heater elements are usually being 'wet' by coolant in a H6(or NA 2.5/2.0) so it needs more current to offset the cooler O2 sensor. Your car did not exhibit this behaviour so I would say coolant leak at a hose or radiator is more likely

This is also why I turn the radiator fans on to keep the engine cooler

Had exactly the same problem - exhaust in the coolant, but got to the point where I could only get about 5-10km before I had to stop before overheating!

Swapped out engine from a wrecker (great deal @ only 81,000km) - and all fixed.
The old motor runs fine (never run dry/hot), and obviously needs a head job, but otherwise good to go for someone that wants an EZ30R to play with.
