Nope you're not wrong at all.
Sounds like the stealership just doesn't want a bar of it. But 2.5K sounds reasonably cheap @ dealer rates.

It's not 'normal' either. Mines an 06 model with the best part of 140K on it. HGs don't weep at all. There's people out there with higher KMs that don't have an issue (inversely there's also people with less KMs that have had HGs pop on them)

They called him back to say that the tiny amount is 'normal' for its age (2008 with 126,000km) and he shouldn't worry about it. He told them to do it as he couldn't ethically sell the car as is without taking a huge hit on price. They called him back twice more (mechanic then mamanagement) to say 'dont waste your money, it could go indefinitely like it is'. He's going in this morning to speak to them face to face as in his words, he wouldn't continue driving it like that if he kept it, with one eye on the temp concerned about cooking the engine, he doesn't feel he can sell it without disclosing the issue now that he knows about it, and he doubts anyone will buy it without expecting a huge $ reduction. FWIW - they apparently quoted him $2,500. He owns a business though, so I suspect maintenance of his car is tax deductible, hence his preference to do pay for the maintenance then sell it for more.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't any sign of coolant leak from the head gasket an issue? (Rocker cover and everything else are clean and dry.)

Cheers,

If I were him, I'd get an independent second opinion from another reputable mechanic who knows Subaru's. Sounds like the car is no longer under warranty if they are quoting him that sort of coin. SO I would be getting another assessment and quote to either confirm or debunk the original assessment. Put it this way, THAT does not look 'normal' in my opinion. Unless the dealership were prepared to write a written letter stating that this level of weeping is considered 'normal' and it is standard practise to leave the car as is, then I would definitely be pushing for other arrangements.

Thanks Shav - I had been thinking about suggesting he get another opinion if the Dealership don't start playing the game. Was thinking of suggesting he get an auto trans specialist to take it for a spin too, cause although the seller seems pretty genuine I think he might be in denial about there being any issue with the hard shift!

A trans place should have a more in depth opinion of the workings of the trans, so that isnt a bad idea. Again an independent assessment is always in your best interest.

I can share some personal experience here. I have a 2005 3.0R which has had weeping head gasket for about the last 4 years. Looks just like the OP's photo. I've been keeping an eye on it for the last 4 years and it never changes. When I first noticed it the car had done about 75K. It has now done about 120K. I hardly ever have to top up the coolant, which means it isn't really losing any. I figure it has reached an equilibrium position and won't really change. I don't plan to do anything about it other than keep an eye on it.

This is just my experience with my car. It doesn't mean that the car in question will necessarily have the same outcome. It does go some way to explain the Subaru Stealership's reluctance to do anything with it.

P.S. I've been lurking around the forum for a while now, but this is my first post on any forum ever!

I am in a similar position as well, 2005 3.0R, and the head gasket has been slowly leaking out like that for the past 4 years. My mechanic said the situation hasn't deteriorate, car still drives fine, so I am keeping an eye on it. I am thinking of fixing it if I can get a reasonable quote of the price of the repair.
