Oil - semi-synth vs full synth?

Postby mr_sinistah » Fri Jan 30, 2015 5:13 pm

I know the oil thing is old, I have read through most of the forum but I still ask:

What oil is everyone using?
Synth or Semi?
Change intervals?

H6s take 6.5L?

Main reason I am asking is that...Penrite 10W-40 Semi-synth Everyday is on sale at El Supercheapo for half price, so I am thinking of getting some bottles of that.

I bought a MY05 3.0R-B a fortnight ago, it has Castrol 10W-30 in it right now.
If I get my local the oil + filter, surely they can just do it for labour charge right?

Thanks team!!

In my cars over the years I have gone between mineral and full synthetic, I find that the only real difference is that the synthetic can be pushed harder and still maintain a consistent oil pressure where as the mineral drops when pushed

I figured putting it in the H6 thread might yield different replies?
But yes, I have read that thread too :)

From my best understanding the lubrication recommendation for the H6 engine is a Fully Synthetic.
I have experienced high oil consumption in two Subarus with Mobil 1, so I lean toward Castrol Edge and Nulon.

My mechanic who provides the annual roadworthy states the H6 is a wonderful engine and lasts and lasts, however they must be stringently maintained.
I would only use fully synthetics in the H6 and modern Subaru engines.

I use a 10w-40 semi syn, changed every 5000km. I flog the H6 pretty much every day, plus I often tow a heavy camper trailer and I have had no issues and no oil consumption.

You can even use mineral oil as long as you change it more often.

For a stock engine that's not getting raced the Penrite will be fine.

As Iposted in other oil really thread, I'm using Penrith (or sometimes Nulon) full synthetic 5-30 and perform an oil and filter change every 5 to 6,000 between services. The service guys usually use Castrol Edge 3-30.

I'll probably do this.
Penrite 10W-40 and Subaru OEM filters every 5-6k KMs.

I change the oil and filter every 5K between services.

My mechanic uses a full synth Penrite and I use Castrol Titanium Edge 5w-30. Will prob change over to Penrite (HPR5) too after I finish off the Castrol at the next change. Bloody annoying that the H6 uses 5.5L every change and having to buy a 5L and 1L bottle... :-x

Why not just buy more 5L and keep them in the garage, it's not like you're going to stop doing oil changes?
