6MT Reverse Light Switch Change-out

Postby BillyCorgi » Thu Oct 02, 2014 5:21 pm

Changed out the Reverse Light Switch today.
Did it while in the car.
Sad and very sore right now.

Disconnected the rear gearbox cross members.
Removed the upper Pitch Stopper.
Disconnected the exhaust flexible joint.
Tilted the engine/gearbox back supported on a jack.

Could just get up in there with a crow's foot spanner to loosen the switch, using 18 inch extension bar from the rear of the gearbox.
Getting the new switch to thread into the hole took infinite patience.
It is doable without removing the gearbox but not fun.

Haha I literally put mine back together today from waiting for parts from Sydney.

I used 2 x 10" extensions on a 19mm crowsfoot no other way to do it.

Reinstalling the switch was riding my patience slightly as there is no recess the thread sits in before biting

I think I have been winging about exactly the same things as you

So stoked with the results a good learning experience nonetheless

Yes, I was asking for the same lead-in counterbore on the threads as you were.
Only repeated trial and errors devised a process where the switch could be jiggled into position and the thread started.
At least I can crack a wry smile when I read that someone else on the forum has changed out the back up lamp switch.
Cheers!

I bought my replacement switch years ago - tried twice to get it in - no dice.

Thanks for the directions - might pick up a 19mm crowsfoot spanner and give it a crack this weekend.

Did you guys use ramps to lift the car?

You reckon I could also get access to the top of the shifter linkages at the same time?
I have to replace the bushings as my gearshifter sounds like a truck!

The front of the car was hoisted up as high as the trolley jack would go. The rear wheels were left on the ground.
If ramps were used the ramps would be right where you want to be when lying under the car.

When tilting back the engine/gearbox, the bracket between the lever mechanism and the end of the gearbox also needs to be disconnected.

The linkages need to be taken off to help drop the gearbox to make room. When taking the bolt out get someone to move the gearstick until the right direction is used I think I went left this will assist greatly in removing the bolt from the linkage as it turns the arm

I used a hoist at work...a ramp or even axle stands would make for a fun time not a lot of room under there haha

19mm crowsfoot is a MUST

Didn't realise it was such a common part to go.. Mine's just gone in the last month as well.. Looking at doing headers and cats in the near future along with the gearshift bushes so might as well do it all while it's up in the air by the sounds of it.. What's the switch worth roughly?

MRT website lists them as $68.38 including tax.
http://www.mrtperformance.com.au/produc ... ear_mm=yes
That would be an average.
Seen them less and seen them more.
I paid less.

Got mine from the stealership I think 70 bucks. I needed it pronto so had it airfreighted up to darwin and then sent down so freight stung me a bit mainly cuz subaru up here have no stock and claim this is a very unusual part to fail and that I should bring it in to be checked properly had me paranoid it was something else wrong
