H6 Error - P0011

Postby specwarop » Sun May 18, 2014 8:41 pm

Hey all,

I got the dreaded P0011 after my car start pinging yesterday.
It was pinging a little, so I just thought I got a bad batch of BP Ultimate fuel, which does happen occassionally.
However, it got a little worse last night on the way home, and whilst on cruise control, the Engine Light came on along with a flashing cruise control light.
I did the Odometer diagnostic trick, which spat out the P0011 error code only.

Today, I took off what I think were the OCV (two on each side of the engine, front and back) - though I could see no obvious issues there.
I also changed the oil and filter, though no hugely obvious issues with the oil, which was changed about 5000km ago.

It doesnt seem to have fixed the issue though, so what do you guys recommend I check now?
I am hoping I dont need to take it to Subaru for a mandatory kick in the wallet!

I also should add, any noticeable issues only arose following this recent fuel batch - but I don't want to blame the fuel....

Removing the front OCV's would have fixed the issue. Usually lodges something in the mechanism and stops their response.

If it feels better and drives better, than it should be set to go :)

Yeh i removed the front ones, cleaned them (didnt appear like they needed to be cleaned) and put them back in.
I also removed the banjo bolt next to it, which also appeared clean, and I couldnt see any filter/screen to take out.

Drove the car and it doesnt ping (for the 2km that I drove it), but the engine light stays on, and the car seems somewhat sluggish still...

Needs an ECU reset :) Also assuming you replugged in the solenoid wiring loom plugs?

How do you reset the ECU?
I disconnected the battery for 20min, and pumped the brakes - guessing that didnt do it?

I also did reconnect the valves haha.
Is it likely to be something worser like the timing chain?

Restart car 6 times then ;)

If the solenoid was dirty then it is unlikely to happen again :) Just keep an eye on it :)

Thats the funny thing though, the solenoid itself didnt appear dirty at all....

Drove the car this morning and there is no pinging anymore.
It still feels sluggish upto 4000rpm, but I am unsure now whether this is due to the error code stuff...or just the usual liberty shenanigans....

I also cannot for the life of me clear the engine light. I disconnected the battery, and tried the 6 restarts - to no avail.
I am assuming then the error is just be regenerated due to something still being wrong?

I think he may have been referring to the poor performance - which mightnt trigger an error code???
Anyways, did just have a quick look at the MAF, nothing obvious, but I will clean it as soon as I can get some MAF cleaner....

I know this is an old post, but I had the same problem about 3 months back and thought this may help others.
I'm no mechanic, but am trying to learn how everything works on the car!

Basically these events happened the first time:

- Check engine light came on
- Bought a $20 scanner tool to see what the code was
- Turned out to be P0011.
- Car seemed to still drive fine
- Cleared the codes with the scanner tool.

Second time after researching found it could be related to the oil control solenoids, so I took all four of them out and gave them a clean, put them back in and did an oil change at the same time. Car seemed to go fine.

Also changed air filters, cleaned the MAF and general maintenance.

Third time I thought I had better do something serious about it - it also threw a P0021 code as well, so I ended up getting these components from Japan:

10921AA070
10921AA040
10921AA050 (x2)

The 050 solenoids are the ones at the front. Subaru dealers in NZ are absolute shite. I bought all four solenoids for $500NZ including customs - if I went through the dealers here, that would of cost me about $450 for ONE solenoid.

Car's been running fine ever since with no issues.
