This is what i did to fix mine, just the two vertical bushes.
Once on the hoist it took about 10min.

According to the online instructions this is all done from the cabin:
- Unscrew shift knob, and unsnap the shifter boot
- Remove the trim to access the shifter under the boot
- Using 2 12mm wrenches undo the bolt and remove
- Push out old stock sleeve, and pull out old bushings
- Grease the inside of the pivot tube and press the new bushings in - it's a tight fit to give it some effort
- Make sure the bushings are going in straight!!
- Grease the insides of the bushings and press the new metal sleeve in
- Make sure the sleeve is going in straight, and take your time!!
- Grease faces of bushings where they will contact the control rod clevis
- Slide into clevis - it'll be a tight fit
- Insert bolt and tighten to 8lbs
- Let me review two things - USE GREASE AND 8lbs OF TORQUE
- Give them about half way to work to get comfy in their new home, and enjoy

The pivot bush rarely needs to be replaced. If the play is in gear left/right wooble it's the bushes in the boss that needs to be replaced. There are 4 bushes in the boss and they can't be done from inside the car, only from underneath. Be careful with putting in stiffer bushes in any mounting that locates on the chassis, they will increase NVH.

If you grab the shift rod (from under the car) that goes back to the gear lever and move it about, you will clearly see the worn bushes. Mine were so bad there was almost no bush left!

The pivot bush I'm refering to is the one that the gear stick pivots into via a ball at the end of the gearstick. This bush is a white nylon bush held in with a circlip, you can check this bush from inside the car by taking the console cover off and lifting up the rubber cover. This is the one I say very rarely wears out. The boss bushes are on the end of the lever that attaches to the gear stick and then the boss (more like a uni-joint) attaches to the gearbox selector shaft. These bushes (there are 4) are the ones that wear out and need replacing like RX said in his post obove. These ones need to be done from under the car because you have to remove the boss bolt that attaches to the gearbox shaft to be able to pull the assembly out and re-fit the new bushes.

You talking about the shift linkage bushes? Theyre a bit of a pain I replaced mine but they didn't really need it. And the white plastic knuckle the shifter pops into is usually in pwrfect condition
The pivot bush I was talking about is done in car with two 12mm spanners. Cant remember if theyre under the rubber mats or not I think they are.
The linkage bushes can be checked underneath via either moving the shifter from inside with someone watching underneath or physically moving it with your hand. Pretty hard to see them though

This might help
If you have it in gear and you can move it side to side (like its in neutral) your shifter linkage bushings are U/S. Mine (MY04 3.0 Spec B) was doing this and I replaced the shifter linkage bushings, i also did the pivot bushing (little worn) and the front stay bushing as I wanted a firmer feel to it, I do get a minor rattle noise while driving, but I can live with it.
If you don't want noise transferring through, don't replace the front and rear stay bushings or replace them with Subaru OEM rubber bushings.

Excellent diagram
I replaced my crossmember bushes. Shift linkages. Front and rear stays and STILL had slop then I threw a pivot bush in and was all resolved now the shifts are quite stiff and direct after putting in Cobb sts I had to relearn the gears

In fact it turns out that when Subaru changed the size they made them the same across all the models - both the 6MT AND the 5MT. So I guess Subaru made up for the bummer because these will now fit all the 06 manual transmission Subarus.
