Hi guys,

I'm attempting for the first time to change the oil and oil filter on my gen 5 liberty by myself. just need a few tips etc.

also im not sure which oil and oil filters I should use.

SuperCheap auto seems to be selling Ryco Oil filters, are they any good? does anyone recommend them or are there others that may be better? if so would you please give me the part number of a link to the website that sells them.

My car gets used mainly for long drives and is usually cruising along at 100+kph

Also the dealer has always put Castrol Magnetic 10w-30 but i don't think that's available for just off the shelf purchase, i can get 5w-30.

Regarding the filter, i always use the genuine Subaru part, whilst im there i also purchase the sump plug crush washer ( this should be replaced with every service )
Cant help you much with your oil unfortunately as you would use a different grade to mine, though surley you can buy the castrol 10/30 from somewhere??

Well firstly Ryco Filters are great, most mechanics use them and some mechanics use even cheaper branded ones but at the end of the day if you change a filter every service you will be fine, apparently you need 6.5 litres of oil.

Oil Wise depending on how you drive you should purchase a suitable oil for your drive style...
If you thrash you car, i mean you accelerate hard most the time i highly recommend you use "Motul Chrono" 300V 5w40 but it is expensive as over $120 for 5 litres! Only found in autobarns call before you go to see if they have it.
Other wise if you drive normal get any other brand you like but make sure its fully synthetic and 5w40 since we are heading into summer so 5w30 would go too thin on hot days. other brands i'd recommend for normal driving are Mobil 1, Castrol Edge and if you don't want to spend as much as them Valvoline you know what i mean...

DO NOT USE RYCO on the 3.6L. Subaru Genuine Oil Filter only!

As for oil, Subaru have recommended oil viscosities to suit the 3.6L which has a unique engine design and needs the recommended oil.

Or just put a Subaru sticker over where it says Ryco it will do as good a job filtering oil as the a genuine filter. Also 5w30 and 5w40 are the specified oil viscosity by Subaru.

For someone who likes to make themselves seem as if they know everything i can't believe my recommendations make no sense to you??? How's about you explain with your "proof" how my oil recommendations are 20 years old. Just because you were proved wrong by me once already it seem you are still a bit sour so you can keep spending your time monitoring any posts by me, it seems you have nothing else to do in your life, i'm starting to see why you like to think about assholes...

I am a qualified mechanic and no way would I fit a non-Genuine filter to a Subaru Especially for the price difference!

i hope your not taking me as a know it all like some others on this forum, but can you just explain why you would only use genuine oil filters on a subaru? also would you do the same for any other car makes? As i am an apprentice mechanic and we use ryco unless the client specifies they want a genuine filter (usually people with expensive make cars)

Here's some facts for you. The price difference between a ryco and a genuine is very little. The genuine has been designed to run a H6 engine (they are different filters to EJ filters) It has the correct bypass pressure/filter media/flow design. It just seems stupid to buy something that's not designed for your car for about the same price. Secondly, who the hell needs $120 oil unless you're running a race engine. Even then it may be a little far fetched. Using the grade of oil recommended in the service manual will do fine. If your car's been running conventional oil all its life synthetic won't change any of the wear characteristics but it may increase service intervals.

I use the Motul $120+ Oil in my 3.0R which i track occasionally, but its my driving style which needsthis type of oil because i have had normal oil loose its molecular structure early from driving hard before, so i put in the best of the best. as for my hilux i lubricate the engine with kraft smooth peanut butter.

My own H6 gets flogged harder than most having racked up 4000km's between 3200rpm and 7200rpm in testing. Still running Castrol 15w40 and I wont service it till 10,000km's because the oil is fine.
I also have a Nissan VQ35 V6, never had the oil break down and it makes double the power of a stock H6... scary part is it has done 22,000kms without an oil change Oil analysis was fine, just changed the filter every 5,000km's and then top up the oil level to account for oil lost during filter change

Reason I wont use Ryco? Seen to many failures. FWD SR20 Nissan's getting pressure spikes and having the filter unwind itself on a $11k engine (thank god for ECU spark cut once oil pressure dropped!) Fitted genuine filter, no issues ever again.

It was on my previous liberty which also used to get tracked. 2002 RX manual. i went to a track day at Philip island it was a 33 degree day by the end of the day it was idling funny, i checked the oil... it had gone dark brown and watery. It was valvoline fully synthetic 10w40. This was after 5 sessions of 20 mins. i drive it quite hard i was trying to beat my lap time with new tyres... every change down was rev matched, the car was so well set up i was keeping up with much faster cars in the corners.

took it to the mechanic the following week he said the oil had gone off, it was only 5000ks old, eversince then i've been using motul never had any problems, still service every 10000kms to be safe.

As for the filters i'm quite shocked to hear that! If thats true maybe ill consider getting a genuine filter in the future... Though i hate dealing with Subaru genuine parts they're dickheads.

Don't go to the dealership. Try to find someone with a hookup (i.e. they buy them in bulk) and buy a box off them for about half what you pay at the dealership. That or order them from overseas...
