it's not normally the chain itself
it's the tensioner that fails

agreed.
Yeah what an annoying/ expensive issue.
It's not uncommon for the tensioner to go. The chain itself will last forever though. (as long as it doesn't go slack and snap).

im having a very slight ticking in the engine bay aswell, am about to go in for a service, but the local mechanics are pretty rough, not sure if they would necessarily pick up on it or do a good job taking everything apart to inspect, makes me nervous

quite an extensive job I assume? even to inspect and then to replace even more of a pain?

H6's are inherently loud.
You can still hear slight rattling with mine on idle and the chain/ tensioners are 100% (it's been opened up)
Unless it gets loud- don't worry about it.

Labour to remove radiator and the timing chain cover, then replace r/h tensioner and put everything back together was $600

DAMN! how loud does it need to get? I can only just hear it on idle when the bonnet is open and I got my face in there, when its bad can it be heard with bonnet closed or not that loud?

Can hear mine with the bonnet closed. It doesn't really make much of a difference though.

Agree on the noise level of a H6.

I don't believe I have an issue with mine but I find myself looking around to see if a diesel has pulled up beside me.

You went to NEC correct??

Just around the corner from me!

Haha yeah they're right near my work (redland drive) and the discs were being replaced so i got them to check the chain out too. Did a good job.
