yes, but what were his cruising conditions like?
doing 80km/h or sitting behind a 4wd or truck doing 110...
remember that air get's "thicker" in a logarithmic way the faster you go.

i.e double your speed, the wind resistance is 10x as great...

And you have to consider if the road is flat or up and down a lot.

Well this reading was actually after I'd gotten off the expressway and filled up. Zeroed my trip meter and cruised the Pacific Hwy down through Turramurra, Gordon etc, stopped at 3 sets of lights, average speed would have been 65-70km/h.

My usual highway cruising reading is 8.2l/100km cruising at 120km/h @ 3000rpm.

Thats pretty low. Mine will be around 7.5@ 100kmh on a flat road. Anything over 110 and it will creep up to the 9's

I've posted a few times in this thread about economy - mine has always been shocking compared to some of you.

Just got a wheel alignment done for the first time since owning the car, and they were a fair way out of alignment. Tyres were fried too - check out the attached! This happened taking off from the lights at about 50% of maximum power. Quite happy it didn't happen at higher speed.

Have switched to new tyres which are less 'fun' but more economical/comfortable (Pirelli P1s).

Driving the car out of the tyre place it felt unbelievably different, the steering was light as a feather but still responsive, tyres quieter, whole ride a lot smoother and less shopping trolley-ish.

Now very curious as to what impact non-****ed tyres and actual aligned wheels will have on my economy. I'll investigate and report.

Saw the highest km till empty reading on my car a few weeks back, 820km and this was 1 hour after filling up on the Hume highway driving back to Sydney. My car seems to love that clean country air as soon as I got to the M7 it dropped back to around the 650-700 mark

I have an 08 gtb (2.5T) and I found going to 98 paid off handsomely in both running sweetness and economy. Went on a 1100km run (each way) with a mate in an 07 3.0RB , new to him, last year . He was used to running in the 10 l/100km range, so I persuaded him to try 98 at the first fill up. He was down in the 8l/100km range by the end by the end of the tank. The higher octane allows the engine to advance the spark a lot more than 95, and get more power out of less fuel. I have also seen filters opened up after running on 91 and 95, and the 91 units were absolutely FILTHY, so I recommend everybody stays away from 91.

Just bumping this thread back up....

After 900kms in 4-weeks of owning the my new MY08 Outback 3.0R, I'm currently getting approximately:

Average according to trip computer 14.2L/100km
City (daily commute) 15.8L/100km
City (nannying it) 14.5L/100km
Highway 10L/100km

I use to think my Gen3 Outback H6 liked a drink, but my Gen4 now takes this to new levels

What fuel are you using that you get 10l/100 cruising?

Shiv, those numbers are terrible. Have you checked it, may be the ecu giving a false reading. If not, you need to get a tune or something

I've been running it on 98 ever since I got it earlier this month.

My daily commute is point and shoot city traffic with lots of hills.

My Gen3 H6 was slightly better so bad fuel economy is nothing new to me. But yeh, maybe a tune is in need...

Is it well serviced - some of that could be a clogged air cleaner element? Is there any soot around the exhausts, or a petrol smell up the back, after its fully warmed ? Do you consider yourself lead footed - I know they are a lovely smooth motor, and rev sweetly?

Shiv,

You are not far off what I get with the 6mt.

Do you leave it in S or S#?

Yup well serviced and also got a service from the dealer pre-delivery. Not much smell around the exhausts compared to my old H6 which smelt like it was burning fuel for fun. I think it could do with a replacement air filter though, it looks a bit dirty...

Its definitely smooth and eager to rev, though I don't tend to go much over 4K. I'm not a lead foot but yeh for sure I like to keep my foot into it that little bit longer purely for pleasure.

Jase I run it mostly in Intelligent mode with bits of Sport mode here and there. Reassuring to hear and see via this thread that I'm not the only one getting these sorts of numbers. One thing I've learnt since having the instant fuel economy gauge in this car is just how bad stop/start traffic is for fuel economy!

Not a big deal. Will just have to modify my driving style and probably carry a jerry can the next time I do some extended beach driving.
