If you found main/ big end bearing shavings ect in the oil filter in a MY06 H6 3.0L RB
would it be safe to assume it was starved of oil and Nothing" else??

Its all good man.

The bits of bearing that were in the way were kindly ground off by the crank journals. Is now a proper fit and all is well..

So to attempt to summarise the oil advice in this thread - correct me if I'm wrong.

Some people say 5W, others 10W, 5W arguable gives better protection at low temperatures but the H6 may go through it a bit quicker. 10W highly unlikely to do any harm. Unclear whether the "0W" oils around would be a bad idea.

Some people say 5W/10W-30, others 5W/10W-40. Seems to be a split between people saying "why use 40 when the spec is 30" and those saying 40 is sensible for high km engines. Seems to be general agreement that above 40 is not a good plan.

Some cars use virtually no oil, some chew a little bit, oil use could be a problem or could be 'normal' for a moderate km H6 which didn't have an ideal running in period when it was new.

Everyone seems to have their pet brands but a lot of votes for Magnatec and Penrite out of the sensibly priced options from what I can see.

Fair - yes

The principle idea of the thread was to assist H6 owners in remembering to check oil regularly and be SURE there is enough in the motor and then to service it on time. The rest of the details matter less than these principle ideas

I am running Shell Helix 10/40w at the moment - very small amount of usage happening. Previously Castrol Magnatech, no usage but oil life was limited to 5000km after which it quickly becomes less effective as a lubricant.

See - none of us can resist an oil opinion lol

I can only agree with this... A rebuild WAS expensive and 5,000 km later the oil was just touching the bottom of the stick.... I check every 1,000 km but seems the short trips are eating it like petrol! Going to my local garage today to swap to 10/40 in the hope it slows usage.
In the last 1,000 km (all short trips) it has gone from being 5mm above minimum to touching the bottom of the stick. 2 litres topped it up and it seems no damage done but my engine on 5/30 just eats too much... And this is a rebuilt engine(80,000km)
Subaru doesn't want a bar of it and although it cost me near enough to $10K to fix the solicitor says it will cost that much again to sue them. Subaru company car missed its first service on time so i wonder if they dold me a dud.
Stuck with it now... Fortunately it is a great car and i plan a kido tune if i can get someone to do it up here on the mid north coast....

Definitely use a 10/40

I am using just a basic Shell Helix HX7 with zero consumption and decent protection life on the motor too

Thanks tradewind... using penzoil.10/40.. gotta go aussie.... And seeing they didn't do the plugs on the rebuild i replacedvthose too....
and kido in Coffs!!! Fair dinkum that's my home town. I live in tweed heads but start a new job in Coffs on the 13th jan. i'm doing like a mining job - fly subbie in on Mondays and out Fridays ....

Its funny I read this when I first came onto this forum some years back. Have always been an avid oil checker but the Lib has been great never used a drop penrite 5w40 extra 10 is where its at
I reckon the hot weather up here helps for cold starts as the engine is semi warm anytime haha

But great idea for a thread and some excellent info for newbies and even veterans alike

Checked mine for first time in 2-3 weeks since head gasket repair - all good, has 10/30 Castrol goop the workshop put in when the HG repair work was done. Must get it out soon
