So far from all reports, the EZ36 engine is oil consumption issue free!

I have heard of no oil issues with them either

It's nice to see that the 'which oil is best' argument isn't confined to the WRX forums! Coming from a rexy, and the related forums, there are literally hundreds of opinions on which oil is 'best'. I always found it funny that people would spend the time to trawl through forums, looking at the multitude of opinions (usually contradictory), when all you need to do is open the owners manual and look at the manufacturers recommendations. Who else would know better than the company who built the thing!?!?! And, if your engine is no longer stock, then ask the person who built it. ;-)

As much as you're right - the whole point of modifying your car is putting in bits that are stronger/bigger/different to the manufacturers specifications. The manufacturer has a whole bunch of limitations in terms of sound/packaging/cost/existing parts/dealer network. The manual also says to put in a certain SAE viscosity, it doesn't specify brand, so there's still a lot of room to move. Honestly I don't think it matters too much - pretty much everyone is using a premium oil, and while I'm sure they are different, I doubt any difference is contributing to any real long term differences, unless you're running something crazy - in which case, as you said - talk to your builder.

To round out the year on this one

1. Ensure engine is filled to correct level
2. Change oil every 5000 - 7000km
3. Use a premium oil
4. Check level at least once every 2 weeks

Can't go much wrong sticking to this

I just wanted to add my past experiences with my 2008 3.0R b-spec... It had been drinking 1.5ltrs of oil every 2000kms with the oil my mechanic was using (valvoline fully synthetic 10w40).

I would notice the oil is low by the different sound on start up and obviously top it up. I rev my car out to the limiter frequently... its just how i drive and i love the sound,feel etc so i expected some extra oil compsumption. But i figured 750ml every 1000kms is a bit too much. So i decided to get myself some RACE OIL :twisted: MOTUL 300v chrono 10w40... $130 for five litres (bought 10ltrs), and the amount of dust on the carton from it just sitting on the shelf for ages was ridiculous!

Anyway next service gave it to my mechanic to service with my oil, he asked why i wanted to use such an expensive oil and i said "because i thrash it" and he rolled his eyes and said i wasted my money but guess what... almost 0 oil consumption in the next 7500kms (thats how often i service). when i took it in for that next service my mechanic commented on the colour of the old oil. He was shocked how clear and yellow it still looked as he drained it. So now i only use that oil... a bit more expensive but worth the piece of mind!

MY05 with 135,xxx KM on ODO. The previous owner did changes every 10k but I defs want to do every 5-6k....

I usually run Castrol 5w30, mine uses a little bit of oil, but generally only when the right foot is a bit heavy.
Next time I do the oil change, will definitly give the Penrite 10w50+10 a go!

I made an oil change decision before checking I had adequate stock on hand for an oil change

I had to run to the local CALTEX (and only) service station for supplies. I ended up with HAVOLINE Premium Full synthetic 10/40. This was certainly not by choice as there wasn't anything else, that all said and done its doing a great job so far. Wasn't anything like cheap either.

Recently brought a 130k, MY04 3.0 Spec B off a family member and like most Subarus it burns oil. So when I got it home I added Liqui-Moly engine detox, drained oil, new filter, than added Liqui-Moly engine oil resealer and used Penrite HPR 10, 10W-50 full synthetic. 3 weeks on, oil level still good :D

I have 144k on the clock and running 10w30 Valvoline Synthetic. Doesn't burn a single drop. The level has remained the same for almost 5000km now. I need to check with the garage as to which specific oil he used. Seems to do the job though. I think most of the miles on this car are long distance hot miles as there really are no signs of engine wear that I can tell.

To really see you would have to crack the engine open and have a look
Because you can't really see into the EZ30 anywhere, the signs I am talking about are the basic things like white/grey smoke from the exhaust
Excessive oil consumption.
Oil anywhere it shouldn't be like the intake or even in the air filter. That would indicate blow-by
Anything in the oil when you drain it. Things like metal shavings are generally not good
Loud ticking sounds
My engine just sounds smooth when idling.
