H6 3.0 - Lack of checking = Engine Carnage

After the last couple of weeks talking to all the people who ring and ask about SC kits from all around the earth I have learned that apart from sheer bad luck like oil filter failure a lot of people are not checking their engine oil once in a while. Its not like they consume much but they need all of it all the time, running low and giving them some hard work means the 3.0 nearly goes terminal immediately

I have been told directly by owners of 4 different cases of total engine failure due to low oil levels (last 2 weeks alone). Appalling when you think about the cost of working on these engines and they arent exactly out there by the dozen to pick up as a replacement engine either.

If this post saves another 3.0 from going terminal then it will have achieved its aim

My car doesnt use a drop but I know that because I check it every 2 weeks regardless.

Have you checked the engine oil level in your 3.0 lately????????????? Did this post maybe save you a super expensive engine lesson???????

good advice mate.

too many people look only at the sticker on the window and the odometer.
and assume that you don;t need to lift the bonnet in between (except when the washer bottle runs out!)

Exactly what is needed on this forum. Infact any forum. ill upload photos very soon of my destroyed engine which was caused by this exact lack of checking levels.
I check once a week now.

As an indicator for others, what do you reckon it will cost to get your baby back on the road and running sweet?

oh man... this reminds me of the "Weird Habits" topic. I tend to check engine oil levels 3-4days aweek!!! n every time i check it, it always start from the morning (sticking it in n out 4-5times) then again in the arvo... somehow i like it to be bang on the max mark!!!

sometimes my brain tries to do me a favour and blacks out certain words as I read, classified document style.

Okay, what it did cost... it cost near $1500 labour just to find what the problem was, then about 3 weeks to find a H6 (which had 8500kms on it!!), then $4500 to buy it, then another $1500 to put it in, plus a clutch. so $8200 later i was back on the road. Price i had to pay for being so naive and lazy. Not to mention i got Glandular Fever because i put myself under huge stress about it and uni was coming around very quickly.

I've uploaded an album to Photobucket showing the crankcase and damaged pistons. all pistons were damaged in some way. every bore was damaged. the crank was damaged. most of the valves were bent. nasty stuff. http://s1092.photobucket.com/albums/i40 ... b/carnage/

I took mine out a while back and forgot something that I left at home, when I got home I smelt a burning that wasnt normal so I checked the oil and what do you know it was barely registering on the dipstick, that was lucky I had just bought the car and it had just had a service about 6000kms before so I assumed everything would be good. Didnt drive it until I changed the oil, this reminds me to check it again. Thanks

Ps. I also found a receipt from Subaru replacing the big end bearings and short block I assume that is due to a lack of Oil over $3k of work, this made me quite weary of letting the oil get low.

Freakers hey

Good work and thanks for the very honest information

I would like the forum moderator to make this a sticky thread - right at the very top - no less.

If anyone likes to comment what oil they run, brand and grade, also useage amounts could be helpful too.

I run Penrite 10/40 - extra 10, I think it may use around 100ml per 5000km at the most

Do you have any saleable H6 parts?

I used Castrol Edge 5w30 for ages, then swapped to 10w60 Edge because i got told its better to run a thicker grade in a 6 cylinder.Good advice coming from a MoTec engineer.
oil usage differs ALOT. first engine would chew through it, used around 2 litres in the 7000kms just before the engine blew. this new motor would use around 200ml in 2500kms. unreal

And Tim, ive got alot of different parts like injectors, rails, lines, bolts that are in usable order. also have an intake manifold without throttle body (sold pending payment). ive got everything you see in the photos but they are all torn to shreds. after anything in particular?

Thats exactly what i have done also, went the extra 10 so in effect I am running 10/50w.

The worst thing you can do in these high stressed engines is go too thin. In the Subaru 4 cyl we see oil consumption if we use a 5/30 or similar light grade, but soon as we go 10/40 oil consumption and blow by stops.

If I was a highway driver just crusing day in and day out never really giving the engine any kind of hiding I would be ok with a 5 weight oil, but in any other circumstances other than that I am with the heavier grades.

Intake manifold if it doesnt sell will interest me

I'm a paranoid OCD oil checker and have noticed with the twin hairdryers attached to mine that whenever the wife has it for a little where she would only drive short distances (not enough distance to even get to op temp in winter and prolly not even using any turbo spool whatsoever  ) oil level drops slightly. But, as soon as I'm back behind the wheel again  virtually nil oil consumption, that said, I still check it incessantly. Even if I installed one of those digital oil sensor thingys I'd still check it! :fool:
I was briefly a mechanic in a specialist Mercedes garage and we'd work on a few air cooled Porsches occasionally and flat 6s burn oil - its just what they do. Dunno what the new Porsches are like but if this video is anything to go by, they are pretty serious about oil in their newer engines:
