Phew checked her this morning before I left for work and she was pretty low, thanks for the reminder. Drove the parents car to work and tasked the old man with getting some new oil.

Cliffo

I used to be a major oil fanatic and still am in some ways.

The 5/30 is recommended for general motoring in Liberty - but if you are hard on it then maybe you can do as I do, step up to 10/40w for extra protection at slight expense to fuel economy in winter but better protection in hot conditions.

Get a second opinion on the matter ...........

Many thanks to Ric this thread is now sticky

It is pleasing to see the positive attitude taken in the posts and its all for the benefit of us all with 3.0.

I reckon if the things ran 10c cooler they might be a bit easier on the oil - but thats how they are made. I see Perrin noted that as well, the H6 runs hotter by design than the H4s.

I'm running 5w-40 and had 0 oil consumption prior to the s/c.

Since installation of s/c i'm using a small amount that's not worrying me but in saying that i'm looking to upgrade to either 5w-50 or 10w-60 when I run out of my 5w-40.

I found with the Subaru 4s (when SC'd) that they work fine on 5 weight but they consume oil, on 10 weight they work fine and oil consumption drops to near zero.

Highly likely same scenario with H6

Can agree with that one, extremely good and PROVEN solution in the Subaru SC 4 cyl cars. WIN

I check my oil every weekend, Sat morning before she gets out of the garage. I have been using all Redline lubricants for 3 years now and (engine 5W40, gearbox ATF, diffs) and have used none between service intervals until I got the SC. After the SC install/tune and a couple of months running, I did a hot lap of Tassie and noticed daily oil consumption of 100 to 200 ml over an average of 6 hours driving per day. I decided to top up with a Castrol 20W50 (the only one I could find with a 50 grade thickness) and after about 3 days, no more top ups were required. So, for me, then next batch of oil I buy, I will be looking at a 10W50 as I know with the SC, I will be doing some spirited driving in the future. Subaru use a Castrol 10W40 in their servicing for cars under warranty, but I guess after you have more kms on the clock (mine are over 230K now) then a thicker grade oil makes sense.

I stumbled over my Penrite oil bottle the other day - seems I was mistaken

I am using 10/50 with extra 10 in effect 10/60w

Works very well, but I cant qualify that from a Supercharged perspective yet

I have a pretty good idea from the 4 cyl cars  which were supposed to be the weakest engines of all time, turns out the EJ201 lives with 11psi boost and Castrol Magnatec is the oil.

Can someone more mechanically minded than me, please let me know the proper way to check the oil level?

e.g. engine hot or cold?

I just want to make sure I am doing it the correct way, now that I have been terrified by these horror stories!!

i usually let me engine run for 5 - 10 mins to heat up, because thats usually around the temp the oil is working at, then i turn the car off and check it
