Dont Chew dont go hard enough hahaha

lol the H6 is a little worse than the gt's with oil consumption, its a well known problem with some of them drinking heaps of oil, its good that subaru just replace the whole motor if they have to touch the motor.

This oil consumption issue is worrying me. I'm currently tossing up between a new WRX and a second-hand 3.0R-B.

The RB is winning since 1. it's a liberty and 2. bonus of non-turbo $$$ for insurance.

How concerned should I be buying a second-hand car that (should) have at least one year left of warranty?

I wouldn't be too concerned asi, the number of cars experiencing consumption issues is fairly small, and it seems to happen in the first 20,000km. Subaru are being very good with it also which helps.

The Lib is a very different car to the WRX, more 'grown up'. Much better interior finish and a better 'grand tourer', if you want the go fast factor, the rex is a better bet.

Cheers MIB.

So I can be confident of ant 3.0R-B that hasn't had an engine replaced if it's clocked 20k then... That's very good to know.

And trust me, I'm very aware of the differences between the rex and the liberty :)

In all honesty, I wouldn't be too concerned if it has had a bottom end in it, it's all factory replacement.

Remember the 5.7 when Holden first put them in the Commondore... they replaced thousands of engines for oil usage...

Very good point...

Funnily enough, when I bought my current liberty second-hand from a dealer, they had to replace the block after it blew up when they were fixing a few things before pick-up.

As noted, my main concern was how wide-spread the problem is.

Seems to me the 3.0R-B is now leading the pack again.

Good pic asi, I couldn't be happier with mine (even with oil usage), I came out of an XT Forester into the spec B and it's a fair step up in luxury/quality.

For the record, apart from Ric and myself, I've only heard of a handful of other 3 litres that have had excessive oil consumption. There are a few on the MRT forum who have had blocks done, but it's certainly the minority.

Mine may have come good!
I did about 4,500km in 16 days on my trip. It initially dropped to almost halfway between F and L on the drive to Adelaide, but then hardly dropped at all for the rest of the trip.
I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow, to let them see how much it used. I'm sure they are going to want another 2,000km test of city driving to see how it behaves now.

Does that mean they expect that the oil usage should decline as the engine is run in?

Hope that is the case for you Ric, as no doubt having the block replaced will have you off the road for a bit.

Just been. It took 800mL over nearly 5,000 km, which is way down on before my trip.
As expected, Subaru Australia had already requested a second test, but over 5,000 km this time.
I've done 19,300 km, so it will be nearly ready for the 25,000 service by then.
Naturally, I'll be straight back to them if the level gets down to the low mark before then.

Maybe sitting on 115k for hours at a time in the hot SA weather was just what it needed to bed in properly ;)

I dont really belive that the rex is better at all for speed.

Lib's still have a better bottom end then the wrx's, better compression and a few other goodies that the wrx doesnt have.

I still love my libs 100% over the wrx's :)

A few H6 people have experienced this - an increase in oil consumption in the teens which then settled. 800ml in 5K is prob OK as long as it does continue to reduce. Fingers crossed

I dropped in for my consumption test the other day, 2k since service and it used 500ml of oil, so that looks a bit better than my 3 litres in 6k I had recorded... but still a little on the high side if you ask me, that means it'll use 3 litres between each service :?

What's your total distance now?
Maybe, like me, you need a long hot drive to really bed it in well. Maybe a quick run up to Cairns ;)

Total distance is 13000km, it had a run to Tassie when it was 2 days old, over 6000km in 2 weeks, should have bedded it in well :)
