I have the dreaded engine light and flashing cruise light. Also car coughs and splutters above 4500rpm.
Took it to a general mechanic who cleared codes but they return after a minute or so. He suggested AVCS system - one bank not working and therefore fighting the other bank at 'high' revs. Does that sound right? Can I check/correct it??
It idles happily and up to 4000 rpm - very nice. I need to get a roadworthy to transfer ownership. Won't pass with light bisso.
i took her home for the weekend and have tried to find the codes but din't have much luck. I have just purchased a OBDII/EOBD scan system.

Gave her a full tank of Vpower.... checked petrol cap.... sprayed contact cleaner in AFM and AVCS connections...

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

He said we will do it by trial and error. That's why I brought her home to see if I could assist in diagnosing but without codes it makes it impossible

I am still having the engine light and flashing cruise problem, been going on for about 1.5 years now. My engine doesn't die at 4500rpm and the warning light only flashes when I top up the fuel tank. The warning light disappears when about 1/3 of the tank is used. When the warning light is on the engine is sluggish from idle to about 3000rpm and it was using around 16L/100km of fuel during moderate use of the throttle and moderate traffic.

The repairers I have spoken to basically downloaded the error codes, and suggest they go fixing by a trail and error method, which I am not willing to approve.

Did you eventually get this problem resolved?

I was having the exact problem, minus the engine performance changes. Check engine light, flashing cruise and no SI-Drive. would come on, i would get it cleared at subaru, who told me i needed two new cats at the very expensive cost of 6000+, thought i would try another mechanic when the light returned. same thing :( was getting low efficiency from the cats, needing replacement. found a deal for some universal cats installed 1400, but now they rattle against the heat shield metal making it sound like heap of junk which is another annoyance all together, but since then no more check engine light. Mechanic thinks i may have a problem with current flow and earth leakage, causing the computer to malfunction and send raw fuel down the cats, hence why there life was so short at only 70000, still need to get that checked out but. Good luck!!!.

You really need to know what codes the CEL is showing, but it sounds like a P0420. If that is the case there is an easy fix for it on an 2003 or later car. Just tweak the ECU code to not check the rear O2 sensor. The rear O2 sensor's only function is to check cat efficiency so there is no real downside to this 5 minute tweak.

There is comment elsewhere that on 'later' models the rear O2 sensor might be used for 'trimming' A/F ratios, can anyone comment on truth of this for Subaru ECUs and if true then at what model year did this use of rear O2 sensor commence?

Presume that if rear O2 now used for trimming A/F then it shouldn't be tweaked out by 'tuning' the ECU code?

2002 onwards have rear O2 sensor influencing the tune ;)

I’ll throw something new into the equation though. The last time it happened a few days ago, the gear box ‘froze’. Eg, didn’t change down when slowing and coming to a stop. It stayed 5th. The dash was showing — where the 'D' for drive is meant to be. I managed to take off, very slowly though, pulled over safely and changed it into Manual mode so I could drive it home. I’ve been having the same problem with the lights on the dash as well but not the engine dying at 4500rpm. I did find the hack on YouTube to remove the lights though.
