Engine swap for MY01 lib

Postby gxb4wrx » Fri Jun 10, 2011 8:59 am

Thanks to some of the guys on here I now have my heritage leather interior. While i'm in the process of doing in this i've decided to start looking at an engine conversion.

I'm tossing up between a 4 or 6 cylinder engine at this stage, and looking at adding in something like a td05 for boost purposes. My previous car was a n/t toyota supra and i'm wondering whether or not the subaru 6 cylinder engines are as potent.

And also does any engine support work or chasis welding have to be done to incorporate a 6 into the liberty.

There are plenty of engines about, b4 twin turbo's, gen 4 gt engines and 3.0 gen 4 engines. AM seem to be the ppl, also maybe pm runamuck who has just done the same thing and is also looking at a 3.0tt conversion into his gen 3. He has a thread further down this page.

Not keen on the b4's, have driven one and there's a bit of a power gap.

Nice gen 2, so i have my answer i guess, it is possible. Although he said it was only making 150KW, I'm looking to make 220KW.

Fair bit of difference there. Basically i need a good engine to build on, i don't want somethings that's only going to take me so far before I have to start spending big money on it to bring it up to scratch. Therefore i'd rather fork out a fair bit of money for the engine itself.

for 220 KW into your car

buy a MY01-02 STi half -cut (gives you a forged EJ207 and 6 speed)
drop all thatgear in, add a bigger turbo (say VF34-P20/ TD05-20G) and 22 psi of boost
get it engineered and tuned
make 220 KW

Sounds costly? If its running at 22 psi then its obviously going to need a look of internal work.

Going to have one hell of a sleeper i think.

Reccomend anyone to do the work? Had a look at GT Garage but was told that they're over priced, got quoted 6 grand to drop the engine in. Is that steep?

If you dont get it engineered, your insurance will be worthless. Unless its engineered it legally cant be on the road, so if you crash no one will pay anything, and you may be up for a lot more money yourself if you hit anything worth any money.
Thats my understanding anyway.

01+ EJ207 does not need internal work to run 22psi all day every day
it is a semi-closed deck block (stops the bores from moving around under high boost)
and it has factory forged internals.

to upgrade an engine/ driveline package like that you need an engineers certificate for it to be road legal.

where are you located? (putting thin in your profile helps us to give you local guys to help you out)

the RB goes well.
coming out of a JDM TT GT Legacy, it lacks in low-down torque, but it's almost as quick from 50-150km/h as the leggy was.
Once the #RB is up in the revs, the 6 speed really helps keep it in the sweet power band. can;t wait to get the rest of the exhaust and intake in it and get it tuned.

To be honest, the money its going to cost you to get it done, and made sure its done properly, parts and labour and such, you may be able to find a gen 4 with what your after, there are some cheap gen4 gt and 3.0rb sedans popping up.
This has turned into a Hobart based thread. :)
