what oil does everyone use?

Postby josho » Mon May 09, 2011 4:17 pm

hey guys,

just out of curiosity what engine oil are you using in your H6's?
ive only just got mine (its an 05 with 130000kms on it) and got a service done straight away and got them to use castrol edge sport 5w-30. its probably overkill, but i figure it cant hurt?
anyways was just interested to know what you guys use?

5W30 might be a bit thin for your engine based on age - at least that's what I've been told.
I was recommended 5W40 or 10W40 to be safe.

the castrol lube guide recommended 5w-30 in edge but 10-40w in magnatec. maybe full synthetic oils behave differntly to mineral oils? i dont know?
but Yeah i was sorta thinking that (too thin), next service i might get them to use magnatec 10w-40 at least its cheaper, edge sport is like 70 odd bucks for 5L.
it seems to be running fine though, but i guess it would be hard to tell.

At work we use Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 in all turbo and H6 Subaru engines, and we use Castrol Magnatec 10W-30 in all H4 N/A Subaru engines and non-genuine cars.

Engine has done 200K+ and Redline is my preference for all oils:

1. Redline 5W 40 for engine,
2. Redline D4 ATF for Auto transmission,
3. Redline 75W 90NS for rear LS diff, and
4. Redline 75W 90 for front diff.

I was convinced to use the Redline product due to the highest quality synthetic base oil that needs very little additive and remains within spec for significantly longer periods than the most common brands. Coupled with a high quality oil filter (Trasco), I could get 25K from the engine oil easily, but I spoil my baby with fresh Redline at every recommended service (12.5K) and a fresh Trasco Filter element as well. The car is a long term keeper now (as the current model is butt fugly) so I do not mind keeping the essential lubricants top quality and fresh.

I see no issue with OEM spec oil and filter, granted I do change mine every 6,000 kms. I use a genuine filter and genuine oil. If I ever had my car on track, or had performance mods then I would use an oil that exceeds OEM specs, as you've mentioned with your car. But if the car is only used for nice cruises and daily commuting there is no need (in my mind) to spend money on top quality lubricants and filters, even with higher kms. If the engine showed it was wearing due to the high kms (ie. burns oil) then I would use a thicker oil until I had the money to rebuild the engine.

Keiran,

In the 3.0R, the oil filter sits on teh side of the engine above the sump, so not exposed to "bumps", unless it is very significant.

Off topic (and I will get bashed by Ric for this), but what is the new Avatar - Fruit Loops? Get a grip mate!

So all the carbon and sh!t that build up in teh engine is happily stuck in your bearings and oil galleries as opposed to being suspended i the oil.

i WANT an oil to go black quickly, i'm then confident that the detergents are doing their job at removing the crap from my engine.

Redline is probably OK for race motors that are pulled apart frequently where the detergents are not required.

just my opinion
no need to spend that sort of money on oils in a road car
