Just a quick update - still no clutch.... I dropped my car off with the mechanic 3.5 weeks ago, and thought it'd be done when I got back on Tue. Centre diff is done and all the little items I supplied (trans mount, reverse switch, shifter bushings etc). But with Jim Berry moving and having surgery, he hasn't supplied a clutch yet, so my car is still sitting at the mechanic.

Not a massive inconvenience for me, because I have the work van - but more impatient than anything to finally drive my car again .

I notice that you did replace the reverse switch while the box was out of the car.

I had my reverse switch replace late last year, and within a couple of months the new one had stopped working again. Oh Joy.

My mechanic pulled it out to have a look at it, and was able to activate it out of the car with his finger, so the switch itself wasn't a problem. More oh joy...

i suggested a thinner washer (thanks Kido) and my mechanic tried this and happily this worked...

surely this fault, along with the centre diff issues are some sort of design problem with these 6 speed boxes???

Yeah I think I read about your issue. Hmm, interesting. Thanks, for thr info about the washer.

The part itself isn't that expensive, so it didn't really cost much more when the trans is out already. But definitely annoying that it re-occured so quickly. All work I get done has a 12month warranty, so if the same happens to me, I can get that looked at again for free.
I'll make a note of your suggestion, if I'm ever in the same boat .

It was me that suggested the reverse switch while your box was out.
I'm just blown away that the cause of the problem is potentially inside the box. Ric had the same issue and it was a "pull the box apart" to fix the issue - some selector rod that pushes on the switch?
Great box, those 6 speeds, but seem to have some issues over time.
I'd be annoyed if I had to replace the centre diff every 150000km or so, because the replacement part isn't redesigned to suit longevity

Yeah, they're a great gearbox but seem to have a few side-issues. I don't know enough about the internals, but sound like you're spot on.

With the thinner washer and the reverse switch - which part is that? Does that sit behind the switch?
I'm in the process of removing my reverse switch because it is playing up, so would be interested to see if it's just the washer causing it.

Haha - as I type this I'm guessing you mean the washer on the bloody nut!
I'll post this at risk of sounding like a complete dumb ass anyways and just confirm that

I only know what the switch itself looks (and haven't even seen it in position, only the individual part). But would be good to confirm where the washer is

From his description, i'd imagine that the washer sits between the switch and the casing of the gearbox.

What was described as "a fairly thick washer" by my mechanic, he said he replaced it with a washer approximately 1/3 of the thickness to resolve the issue.
I asked him about running without the washer at all.
he said he would be worried about gearbox oil leaking out between the switch and the washer.

Daytona, if you can get some help from another human while you remain under the car, get the switch out of the box, and get the other human to select reverse with the ignition on (reds on dash) and then stand behind the car while you operate the switch with your finger.
If the reverse lights go on and off, it may just be the position of the switch in the box, and the washer trick may resolve the issue....

That bloody switch is a nightmare and three quarters!

Instead of pulling the switch out to test it as its a major pain in every respect. Simply unplug the switch and test connectivity with a multimeter when selecting reverse. A 10min job as i think you still need to remove the heatshield from memory. And as for memory cant remember whether its the white plug or black plug. A guess that the one thats not reverse is neutral?

Unfortunately Brunsy, this doesn't tell you where the problem is. You need to operate the switch independently of the box to know if the switch is faulty. If you leave the switch in the box, the lights not turning could still be the switch or the selector rod inside the box
