But surly not 4 times all with the fuel at differnet levels? And the only reason i was running on an empty tank was because i thought it was bad fuel and was tryna get rid of it

Not sure about the price of the motor as it was done under warranty.

Weren't they covering yours?

Hi fellow 3.0 liberty owners

I've read on this thread about your problems with bunny hopping, pinging and cam angle sensor. I've had the same problem and have since had oil lines cleaned out and inline filters removed but still have the problem. Next step is replacing the VVT solenoids and it sound very expensive. It's been a while since anyone has commented about this problem, have you all fixed the problem finally? I'd love to know so i can get straight to the crux of my problem. I really like my new car but this is really starting to turn me off it.

Thanks in advance

I also thought I'd comment re running the fuel low. It does not pick up the debris in the bottom of your tank any more easily than if you were running a full tank. Why? Because the pickup point is the same in your tank irrespective of the fuel level. If crap is gonna get picked up it will get picked up regardless! Perhaps the myth came about due to the fuel gauge float/arm changing with the level of the fuel.

The only problem with runnin a tank low is that you can suffer fuel starvation when cornering hard or to a lesser detriment, braking hard. Leaning out at WOT as you are flying out of a corner is not good for the engine!

So its been quite a while and its only bunny hopped etc ONCE and that was after being parked on a ridiculously steep incline for about 4 hours..im thinking something didn't like it being parked like that? But the problem of pinging still occurs quite regularly...probably weekly? Like iv said before, i run it on BP ultimate ALWAYS so the fuel shouldn't be the problem. Today i put a fuel treatment thing in, and it made it run so smooth, and after only about an hour or so of driving (not driving any different to before i put it in) the fuel consumption dropped from 11.8 to 10.6...im hoping that means the treatment has cleared something maybe? Maybe there was a blockage somewhere or something? As you can tell im not real knowledgeable with this stuff...but the fact the fuel cons. dropped, and that it ran heaps better HAS to be a good sign right?

Have you considered replacing your fuel pump with a Walbro ? Perhaps some crap from you fuel tank is stuck inside your pump and your problems are being caused by low fuel pressure. We have problems starting Subaru's on board the ships when they are parked on the ramps on an angle for weeks as they have very little fuel in them from the factory. You mentioned parking your car on an angle and the problem re occurring.

For around $150 it might be worth replacing your fuel pump or get a reputable workshop NOT Subaru to measure your fuel pressure with a gauge. From memory I think 45psi at idle but don't quote me.

Also when was your fuel filter last replaced ? Not sure about Liberty's but some of the later WRX's have a filter inside the fuel tank. If either of these filters is blocked you will have low fuel pressure and your car could run lean and cause it to ping or detonate.

Ill look into replacing the fuel pump for sure. So far so good, but im almost certain it will come back...if it does i will give the fuel pump a go!

Im not sure if the libs have a filter in the tank, and if it does, im not sure when it was replaced. My libs always serviced on time by subaru...and the head mechanic of my local subaru is a REALLY good mechanic (known as one of the best around here). Surly they would know to replace it yeah?

There is also a filter sock on the fuel pump that picks up the fuel attached to the fuel pump. If this is blocked or dirty then that needs to be replaced also. Some Walbro fuel pumps come with a new sock. When I replaced my fuel pump in my WRX however it did not. I had to use the sock from the OEM pump. There was an issue with replacement socks being too short and therefore not picking up fuel when the levels become low. Maybe a good thing if you have lots of debris/crap in the bottom of your tank. I'm sure Subaru sells the socks separately.

Sooooo this was not a fun experience. Was traveling down to melbourne on thursday to get my V-tune. Got about 3-4 hours out of melbourne (2-3 hours away from home) and engine light comes on- resulting in, you guessed it, 3-4 hours of NO CRUISE CONTROL  Took it to docklands on friday where the service department took it in before it got its tune so they could try to figure out why the light was on/why it was pinging...i explained that its happened multiple times before and I told them what had been done previously to try and fix it. Got a call about 45 mins later telling me it was done. They told me it was because my engine oil was down about 400ml  I knew this wouldnt fix it/wasnt the problem, but there wasnt much i could do as they just kept saying that the light was off so it was fixed...So my car went up stairs and got its V-tune. Then today I was about 2 hours from Mildura and the engine light came on again, and it pinged the worst it has ever pinged. Usually its only under heavy acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear, but this was pinging non stop in 6th gear on a flat road. Im getting sick of this. So my next step is to get them to replace the cam angle sensor as this is the fault code that keeps coming up, and also look into the fuel pump...Not a happy chappy.

What a load of BS. You can have the engine oil 3 litres down, and no sensors will detect it at all.

I know. I tried to tell them that wasnt the problem but it was obvious they didnt want anything to do with it. When i explained to them i live 6-7 hours away and was leaving the next day they said to bring it back if it happened again. They obviously didnt listen to anything i said. When they called me to tell me it was done they told me they fixed my GPS and it was working fine. When i picked it up the error was still sitting on the screen so i drove it straight from the STi bit back to the service bit and they basically admitted that they hadnt looked at the GPS. Wasnt all that impressed with their service to be truthfull. When i dropped it off i told them it was booked in with Vin for the tune. When they called me i asked if the tune had been done and they told me they knew nothing about it. It took me 3 more phone calls for them to FINALLY take the car up to Vin. Although the STi department's service I couldn't complain about! He replaced my air filter, did an upper engine clean and the V-tune for $350! Was a very professional and fast service too.

Im thinking its the crank angle sensor..but thats only going by what dockklands said, so its not something im putting my money on. I havnt really had a chance to compare the my car with the tune to when it didnt have it, as melbourne was the only place i really got to drive it and thats not my normal driving conditions. But my fuel economy on the way down was about 9.4 and with the tune on the way back it was a solid 8.8 the entire way home which is fantastic IMO! Will keep you guys uo to date on this problem and if anyone has any ideas on what it could be..PLEASE let me know

FFS!!! Really not happy anymore. Had my car in to Subaru today. They tell me there is still no problem (im pretty sure its quite obvious that there is) with my car. He said "but i think it might be because of how hard its drivin" i politely asked him to expand on this and he said "we looked, and a few times its almost been red lined" i said "Is that not WHY they have it there...so that it CANT be damaged. And even so, it shouldnt play up if i want to give it a squirt every now and then..thats bullshit" he then continued to tell me he throught that was why, because when it was revved high it put the timing out. WTF?! I said "Mate, when it happened the last 2 times, i was driving along the highway sitting on 2.5K RPM with cruise set" there was then a long awkward silence and he then kindly told me to bring it back if there was any more problems. All i can say is F*&%ING SUBARU!!! :angry2:
