Fuel Consumption on 3.0

Just got back from a camping trip. I averaged 8.6 litres/100 over around 940kms according to the trip computer. Pretty good considering the car was quite loaded & I wasn't trying to get a low figure, just driving normally.

To clarify: This is with around 90% highway, 5% suburban & 5% city driving. Using Shell V-Power for the first tank and Shell "Premium" for the second (no V available...).

+1 totally had this problem myself.

I was actually thinking to fill up on 95RON and top it up with ethanol from methylated spirits to get there. Doing the numbers need around 10% Ethanol to get 97RON - which is almost bang on.

Actually, we could start a whole new thread on what to do if you're in the bush and run out of 98RON with a retune.

I was actually thinking to fill up on 95RON and top it up with ethanol from methylated spirits to get there. Doing the numbers need around 10% Ethanol to get 97RON - which is almost bang on.

Actually, we could start a whole new thread on what to do if you're in the bush and run out of 98RON with a retune.

Well you can do what I normally do and carry a bottle of octane boost in the glove box for such ocassions. I didn't have this but did have the fuel 'additive' that Subaru provide after a service with them. I think its partly a cleaner and partly a booster. Car was purring on the second tank no worries so all good.

I just got an 06 and I'm averaging 15.8 on my first tank of 98! This is mostly suburban driving, not too many stretches where the car can settle into a low fuel-usage groove unfortunately.

Is yours auto or manual?

What is the tank size in an MY2006 3.0r-b? I am suspicious that the on-board fuel display is inaccurate. Based on where the needle is an kms done, I'm going to end up on about 420-430kms for this tank.

Mine has been chipped and dyno-tuned, clearly not for economy though... If it keeps up at around 16L per 100km I am going to have to get it re-/de-tuned.

Yeah 16L/100km is 6 litre V8 territory. I've always been suspicious of the readings from the on-board systems though

15.8L and getting just over 400km's to a tank is about right for the fuel gauge consumption(around 60L tank)

Tuned, it should improve fuel economy. Stock tune runs horribly rich and the stok throttle tip in(equivalent to a carburettor accelerator pump) just throws fuel at the engine each time you move the accelerator pedal

I cant speak for cars but from tuning bikes
Most of them are set at about 11/1 in the "safe zone" as my boss says haha and from tuning bikes see most power around 14/1. And can have leaner maps to drastically improving fueling

But as kido has said stock is set up poorly and will probably find most brands will do the same.

I've got currently 12.6 (mostly suburb driving, some highway).

Hopefully it's better after I clean the air filter a bit more.

2500kms later I'm sitting on 10.0/100. I don't thrash it much but I'm not granny driving either. I believe that it has a 65l tank and its about right as I get the fuel light around 500-550 ks in which apparently means 10l left so ~100 ks

But next time he is in wa I think I'll try a KiDo tune

Hi - so I finally prised the car away from the other half to check this. It does pull from way down at 1000rpm in 6th. I was able to accelerate from about 25 up to about 60kmh in 6th, albeit pretty slowly. Felt like I was using about a litre per 100m too.

It has an EcuTek Type 2 remapped ECU, something along these lines (this isn't from my car):

Onto my second tank, still sitting up around 16-17 litres per 100km which is, frankly, ridiculous.
