The 1KG extinguishers that most people (including myself) mount in their cars are next to useless for under bonnet fires since by the time you see smoke coming out it's already too late. They are really for cabin fires to buy just enough time to escape.

But yeah I agree you gotta pay to play when tuning a car to those limits. All it takes is for a seal to blow and spurt oil onto the exhaust or a fuel hose to slip and you've got perfect conditions for a BBQ!

not if you have a letter box on the bonnet

in most engine fires the last thing you do is open the bonnet, spraying from underneath is the first plan of attack……. But our cars make it hard with bottom cover.
Not a soobi anymore, but still slightly dirty

When you build a 300kw+ car you arent building it to be feather footed around. Especially if you look at the scale of some of pulse's other projects.. those cars are just mean
And i imagine with Bullit being the gunieu pig car to advertise the kit to the public that it can be done.. they'd be keen to rectify it as abit of P.R. for future business. A clients car blowing up at a track day doesnt sing the highest praise for a tuning shop focused on competition.

It'd be interesting to hear the full story from Mob Boss... he's still active on the forum but hasnt posted in quite a while.

LOL plenty of well built motors blow up at the track and I would be stunned if Pulse or any other garage / builder would provide a warranty for track use.

IMO a Subaru Gen IV Liberty is not an ideal race track car...too heavy for a start but if you wanted to pursue it then I suggest prepped engine bay for a EJ20 transplant, Cosworth goodies and Twin Scroll turbo set up, a front dif with dccd controller.

Thats it right there... if my car or a friends were ever to go up at least there is the chance of saving it rather than watching it burn.

Plus when you're a young man with a soft spot for fire "in controlled situations away from bushland and housing" lol. It doesnt hurt to have one handy either.

Has anyone tried to add a supercharger? Just for better torque and not a massive power increase but say a reasonable increase? say extra 60kw - 100 kw region not sure if would destroy the tranny in an auto though.

as i found out on saturday.. apparently it generates too much heat.. and i could almost garauntee it would shred an auto box... even the manual you'd want to be rolling with the sti box...

Nope but I would be surprised if I got out of it for less than 20k after I had upgraded everything to cope with the extra grunt

Actually all up the costs for me, fall significantly short of any decent used turbo Porsches I've had my eyes on in recent years, at least in the grossly overpriced Australian marketplace. That was the whole point/aim of this project: A sleeper with a Porschesque exhaust note to beat Audi RSs and 911 turbos at a fraction of the cost of buying a Performance Audi or Porsche.

Paul and I took the unwise gamble of ignoring the heat issues before tracking the car that day in 42degree heat. The fire was from the sound deadening around the gearbox which is supposed to be flame retardant. the 1Kg fire extinguisher did a bloody good job and virtually nothing was damaged apart from one minor wiring loom which was swiftly and easily replaced by Paul. But we couldn't ignore the heat issues anymore.
So, we ordered a GT bonnet with the hood scoop and ceramic coated and heat wrapped all exhaust pipes afferent and efferent to both the turbos. This reduced rearward engine bay temps by upto 40% in slow moving traffic and by 60%++ beyond speeds of 40Km/H measured in 38degrees C or more ambient temperatures. As a result now, after a normal run to the supermarket and back the turbo up pipes and down pipes are touchable cool... This heat proofing namely of the Turbo up-pipes (afferents) also has the effect of improving turbo efficiency.
Despite all this, now I have installed two big ass race spec fire-extinguishers up the front  just in case...

The fact is this car in STI guise, despite its weight, is a more than competent track car, managing a 53second laptime in my hands and a just over 50seconds time in the hands of a trained racing driver at the Oran Park south circuit last year just before it closed and that was without the stiffer sway bars... We'll be taking it to eastern creek later this year, with significantly reduced weight, stiffer sway bars and otherwise fully prepped this time.

The '"good doctor"' is still looking for a cheap Porsche  incidentally has anyone noticed now much cheaper they are in europe, we are getting ripped off here in Oz people! :angry2:

Yupp definitely heat is a big issue in the EZ30R/EZ36R engine bay especially without a hood scoop. Believe me I know
Superchargers generate more heat than a like for like turbo and are significantly less efficient at higher revs which would be a shame in these gloriously high and freely revving engines.
