That sounds like the bomb petrol :D

My order is (in WA though):

1. BP Ultimate
2. Caltex Vortex

Everything else is only in emergency $10 fills.

Well considering Shell refines fuel for both Mobil and BP in Sydney (just adding ingredients as required to meet the client's specifications)...

Caltex in Sydney have their own refinery.

Here in Austrailia we have 3 main fuels

Standard unleaded = 91 octane

Standard unleaded with 10% ethanol called E10= 95 octane

Premium unleaded (no ethanol) eg BP Ultimate = 98 octane

My 2002/2003 gen3 H6 Outback auto, 160klm runs like new no oil consumption 160klm under the belt, runs sad on the 91.
Now here's the weird one it runs smoother on ethanol E10 (95) that it does on the Premium (98), and the real crazy thing I get better mpg (kph) on the E10 ethanol as well, than on the Premium 98, go figure. It's as though it likes a bit of ethanol in the mix.

there's more than that. Some brands offer a 95RON premium that doesn't contain ethanol. E10 also comes in various flavours, a couple being BP's 91RON E10 (they don't offer a 91RON without ethanol) and Mobil's 94RON E10. All of the brands seem to do E10 differently. I can't keep up with what Shell is doing with ethanol anymore as I don't frequent their servo's enough

I'm a massive ethanol fan, it just has so many great attributes and my car has been run exclusively on ethanol blends since brand new .... BUT .... that just doesn't make sense. There is no way your 95RON E10 should give even as much mileage as 98RON dinosaur fuel.

This guy "CNY_Dave" is supposed to be a bit of a Subaru guru in the US and has backed my findings up also with the E10, look at the bottom of the page, I know it does'nt make sense, but maybe there's a synergy with E10 and H6 boxer motors they just like it.

There are many things that might explain your observations, but 95RON E10 will not of itself provide superior mileage to 98RON fuel with no ethanol, whether the car just likes it or not.

Freedom Fuels 98 octane variety contains a small percentage of ethanol i believe (10%?).

All I can think of is that it's known fact that E10 burns a hotter combustion temperatures which should give a leaner burn and maybe the H6 computer/O2 and knock sensors sees this and compensates for the better, that's the only reason I can think of.
All I can say it's idles and revs smoother seems to have just as much grunt and is way better on the pocket at the pump.

Stop right there, exactly the opposite is true.

Ethanol results in MUCH lower combustion temps than dino fuel.

It's one of the things I really like about it.

Lower combustion temps + greater resistance to know = more power + more safety

The only trade off is the lower specific energy, hence the need to pump more fuel for any given output.

Ok then if that's true that it burns lower in combustion temps then the opposite could be, that maybe then the computer is advancing the timing more before knocking/pinging occurs hence better results. I've read that E10 burns hotter somewhere though. All I know is that my H6 "not specB" runs better on E10 and that saves me 10 cents per liter ($6.50 per tank) compared to 98

Also if people are worried about the long term use of E10. Subaru NZ have given the go ahead to use E10 in Subarus that have the VIN No's starting with JF1 or JF2.
