Part arrived, all done. Pulley assembly delivered $95. Bearings $17.50. Mechanic to press both bearings, FREE! Thank you. Belt... $82! I'll know for next time to pick up a VN commy belt. Time taken last night to put it all back together, 30min. Happy days!

Exactly the same belt eh?
I didn't replace the belt, but if a vn one fits, well for under $20 i may as well!

Apparently so, info from here: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin ... on-111658/

I'd just take the old one on and match up the size.

Thanks for the contributions to this thread.

My idler bearing shat itself this arvo and I've picked up good info from here like, I'm going to get the bearings for both pulleys at the same time.

Cheers

I might just zip the belt of mine and have a look at the idler bearings

I use a very high quality bearing with silicon grease when I replace the idlers an NTN brand item. They have been on for a decent amount of time and I should evaluate them.

I might upgrade to ceramic bearings next time around - while the rest of you are headed for further replacements i will have the peace of mind of NEVER having to replace them ever again.

What are bearings like this worth Tim just for reference of whether it would be personally a viable option?

+1.
I'm all for doing things properly & doing them once. I only got the option of Chinese or Japanese :( (from a bearing wholesaler).

Yes they are super expensive

Approx $100 ea

While you can buy bearings for $3-$5 which do 50k km they are still prone to failure. The money you saved is gone right away with towing, collateral damage and other possible wrongs.

There are high end normal type bearings at around $9 which are a great compromise and would be highly dependable.

Avoid the real bargin Chinese ball bearings around the $2-$3 mark, these will let you down

My mechanic had a looksee at my bearing and said theres a tiny bit of play in one so ill be changing both bearings and belt. Is it worth looking at changing the whole assembly or just the bearings themselves?

If the assembly is fine there's no need to change it, just get new bearings for the pulleys. I had to replace the assembly as the pulley destroyed it when it came off.

Just the bearings only, unless the paint is worn off the pulley surface and wear has occured on the metal itself. Mostly the idler surface is fine, meaning just the bearing needs the flick

Happy days. I will have a yarn to a bearing shop soon and see what they can come up with for me as far as bearings go. Am I best to remove them and take them to a shop or simply ask about a 6203 bearing? Ive had no dealings with sourcing these as yet so any info I should mention would be awesome

And im assuming oem is the go for belt or is there an equivalent
